I'm sort of new here and LOVE this site. I own a Pro-93 and it's been great but now I have the bug and want to move up to a better scanner. I have read tons of threads here and I know I will get a ton of replys but whats the best type of scanner under $300 that I should buy? I live in Northern MD and want to scan Police, Fire, EMS and Mil/Air. All the departments around here are trunked and Mot. type II. I'm confused as to buying a RS, Bearcat, or Uniden. Any help would be great.

I own a Uniden BC246T handheld, and like it a whole bunch. My next purchase will prolly be a Uniden BCT-15 base/mobile. Alot of folks also speak highly of the Uniden BR330T handlheld. All of these are well under $300.

Some links:

Bearcat is/was a product line of Uniden and has been for many years. Radio Shack has scanners made both by Uniden and GRE. I'm generally a Uniden man myself, but that doesn't necessarily make them better than the GRE products.

Hope this helps!

With you wanting Mil/Air, I'd recommend the Uniden BR330T. I use mine daily for MilAir and I'm consistantly impressed with its performance. You can find them for around $230.

I too was looking for a scanner and didn't need digital. I decided on the Uniden BR330T. It may be marketed as a racing scanner, however if you compare features, you'll see it's much more. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of owners never even use the racing features; I won't.

Well since the Pro-2052 is on closeout at R.S. for $99 you could get a couple if you wanted to. They have MilAir and Mot & EDACS Trunk. Great base scanner.
Good Luck.

Uniden BR330T For portability and the BCT15 for mobility or as a base unit. I highly recommend these two units. They are THE BEST radios for under $300. Good luck!

Unfortunately, all those recommendations go out the window if you're interested in hearing other counties than Baltimore.

While the Anne Arundel trunk is not digital - yet - it's coming. The Harford trunk is digital, and Cecil's Trunk cannot be monitored with any scanner. In addition Delaware is fully digital, tho there is some analog fireground conventional frequencies. Baltimore city is also digital.

For USD300, you're going to have to hunt around. The PRO96 and 2096 won't do milair, so discard them (at least out of the box, and even when opened up, no guarantees as to how well they will work...). You might find a BC296 or 796 under that price, but somehow I don't think so.

The only digital capable scanners are linked and listed here -

Just click on the model number and you'll be taken to a Wiki page with lots of information on the scanner in question. 73s Mike
