I wonder how long we have before the city encrypts all radio traffic. This marks the second call in two days where radio traffic has been relayed to a felon by phone from someone monitoring the APD system on a mobile device. This is the exact reason why I chose to not provide the feed any longer...

While APD does have encrypted tactical channels, this all happened before the tactical team was setup and able to make the switch.

How could you know this?

That's not relevant to the question of how long until they encrypt the traffic. Because of the live feed, special procedures have been enacted including use of encrypted channels. As I mentioned in the first post, both incidents involved fresh pursuit of a felon before tactical units were engaged.

Well, whatever. If that's your reply, then fine. So, the obvious answer to your original, and apparently, only relevant questions is, "who knows?"

Or you could re-hash the same encryption / live feeds discussion yet again. Seems like that's your intention anyway.

That is my reply and my question was how long...

This has nothing to do with "re-hashing" old discussions, this has to do with current event's fueling a local debate over the public's monitoring of the public safety radio system. While I used to be one who provided such a feed, I no longer believe that it's wise or responsible to do so. My personal feelings aside, the angry department supervisors will have the final say.... due to recent events, my concern is the answer to my question is "sooner than later".

The argument of when law enforcement would use 100% encryption was the same when criminals used scanners. It doesn't matter if they use their phone, scanner, if they want to listen they will. Sure, the feeds make it easier to listen in on police, but fire departments will will say their comm's will need encryption too. If the bad guys want to listen in, they always find a way too.

Feed

I agree with Erik, they (APD) were just spoiled for a long time before feeds were possible with EDACS. I don't think it's worth the investment to encrypt all traffic when the EDACS system is practically end of life anyway. They can send 51's via MDT if it's sensitive enough, or use the 21. There is no reason to voice calls of a sensitive or secure nature, most of the time.

That said, I would not personally provide the feed for the same reason drgensel won't and I'm very protective of and responsible with my ability to monitor on my own.
