well, if you want to get picky, I suggest the HF forum, seeing how we don't have a MW forum

Have you actually heard iBiquity's digital system? It's got better sound quality than XM/Sirius, but I think it's going to die just like AM Stereo pretty much has.

What Stations ?

This sounds interesting and has my attention. I looked at the above listed website but there is no mention of what stations or areas are already up and running. I cannot justify spending the cash if there is no stations on the air in my area. Anyone on list know ??

We actually had an AM Stereo station around here for a while.... a short while! One of the last 3 letter stations in the country too... WOW.

I stopped by one of the very few stores in town that carried the radios and listened for a bit. It didn't sound to bad. About the same as a good FM channel though.

Maybe if they hadn't picked an Oldies Country station to try it on, it might have done better. But... Paul Harvey and the market reports sounded the same, so no one bought the radios!

(Off topic for this board) HD Radio

here is a website that list all the channels FM and AM. these radios will do analog and digital[/b]

You will be underwhelmed considering how much money it costs for a receiver, to basically get what you already do. Digital is NOT always better if it's done poorly. I'm not saying it's the engineers fault -- Not at all. They did the absolute best they could given the in-band, adjacent-channel requirement.

The HD Radio receivers are designed to revert back to the analog signal whenever the digital signal drops out. Therein already lies a problem... The digital signal is not as robust as the analog because it's carried on the immediate adjacent frequencies of the analog signal, like saddlebags. It's nothing like the Eureka system that every country except the United States has chosen, which lies outside the AM/FM bands. And, analog has no sunset date like OTA television, so it's going to be like that for a LONG time.

Analog AM and FM really don't deliver the poor quality that everyone assumes they do. It's mostly a receiver issue. People buy crappy AM/FM radios because they're cheap. With the general public, cheap eventually wins over quality. People tossed aside AM Stereo receivers to save $10. They won't spend anything more for a receiver with an RDS readout either. These same consumers are not to suddenly open their wallets for IBOC, en masse, for the same content that they can already get. THAT is the real reason HD Radio is struggling. It's only partially a marketing issue.

Of course I am always curious about new technology, so I'll probably be the first on the block to get an HD Radio home receiver. But, I'm also realistically thinking I might be the ONLY person on the block to ever get one.
