Has anyone used one of these Chinese replacement batteries for the R30 ?

That looks like the genuine Icom battery, I guess it could be some Chinese knock-off.

In any case it's way over-priced, the BP-287 is available from HRO for $129.95.

Well I just couldn't help myself...HRO in Phoenix had one listed as used for $499, so I grabbed it. I know it will have good resale value if I wind up being unhappy with it. I've already griped about my perceived peeves with it, despite not having one, but with that in mind I think I know what to expect when it arrives.

I expect to use this exclusively in a portable environment with a YouLoop for HF and a bunch of different antennae for VHF and above. I don't anticipate it ever being connected to one of my outside ones though.

I still have to wonder about a user selectable step though. The IC-R20 has one, I'm amazed that it didn't carry over to the R30.

It's used, so it probably won't have that "new radio smell" unless Phoenix had it detailed before shipping it, but I'll survive that somehow...should be fun!

Have fun with it, it's a significant upgrade from the IC-R20 which is a great wideband receiver too (I still own my IC-R20).

You won't regret it. I use mine almost exclusively when I travel to visit family in Lexington, Kentucky; public safety stuff (800 MHz P25) is encrypted, while most of the surrounding counties use VHF NXDN or analog. I also monitor rail, and play around with HF monitoring as well. It works like a champ for me.

Your post about it being the one of the best performers for the rail band was my inspiration for buying one. I don't regret it at all.

I love my R30. I sold the R20 to upgrade to it. It scans trunking fast enough on even busy TxWarn sites. Obviously not Phase II or trunked, but hey why not. As for NXDN, it even allows you to put in an encryption key if you know it.

For those of you who have both an R30 and an AOR 8200, which is better on frequencies from 5 MHz to 15MHz on the same antenna?

I have both. Using their respective stock antennas (both shiny metal telescoping whips)...the R30 does better from 100 kHz to 30 MHz. The 8200 has some kind of whooshing phase noise that seems to settle down - mostly - after some time passes when you park on a frequency. Overall the R30 digs the signals out a little better and cleaner.

Ok, thanks. I was wondering if it was worth it to pick up an 8200 as well but I will probably just stick with the R30.

I've got an AR8K, an AR8200 and an R30. While my ARs are great radios, I'd have to give the edge to the R30.

Get the AA battery pack!

I just did! Bought one for myself and another for a buddy of mine who now owes me $57 including tax.

Currently, HRO is showing out of stock at all sites for the R30. Early this morning, 4 sites were showing "In Stock". HRO webpage says delay on delivery, so maybe they think more are on the way.

Considering also buying the "AA" battery holder in the event that the rechargeable battery packs become impossible to find.

Just so you know, the battery and the battery case were back ordered it took a little while before i got them

I've also been checking HRO for stock levels of the IC-R30.
When I checked this morning nine HRO outlets were showing the IC-R30 as in stock at various levels.
It's weird that they're suddenly indicating the IC-R30 as completely out of stock now.

When I spoke with a HRO representative a while back re the IC-R30 he said that the next shipment they received from Icom (which was the most recent batch) would be their last as Icom had discontinued this receiver.

I sold my AR8200 years ago, but own a couple IC-R30s. Just from memory I'd guess the IC-R30 is the winner here re reception and on every other parameter too.
