Is there any kind soul out there that has put together a better user guide to the IC-R5 (other than the included manual)? It really is difficult to decipher. I want to get the most out this unit when not connected to my netbook. Have the cable and Butel software which works fine.

Just difficult to visualize the button sequences / menus / options and translate that into what I want to do.

Thanks

Scott

ICR5 help

I hate the user manual Icom supplied. I haven't found an easy to read manual anywhere so here's my advice.
Try out features one at a time. So find how to store frequencies from the supplied manual and load up just a few of the frequencies you use most then just scan those until you get a feel for the operating system. From there you could check about changing volume, squelch etc. Once you're confident then add more frequencies. Only when you know how to scan go onto band searching.
Don't be afraid of trial and error, reset is easy.

I've had my IC-R5 for over a year now and have the exact same problems. Thought I'd get the programming software and cable by it's not compatible with 64 bit Vista. I would hope there's someone out there that can provide a very simplified programming process for this scanner as trial and error hasn't worked for me.

IC-R5 programming

Mike,

Thanks so much for the software link. Where can I get a cable that will be compatible with Vista 64 bit? Thanks again. Larry

If you have the cable now you should be all set? I have and use ARC5 - it works like a charm on XP and is a lifesaver for using this radio easily right out of the box. Will have a Win 7 machine shortly so I'll try that too.

Otherwise, search on eBay for an "Icom IC-R5 cable". Most are out of China with free shipping (via slow boat). I got mine in that fashion and it works perfectly (after a few weeks waiting for the cable of course).
