Here's the problem....

While plugging the power connector into the back of the unit while it was energized, I was greeted by a very pretty spark, as you can imagine. Of course, I know that's not how it is supposed to be done, so let's just call this my "senior moment" and move on from there.

The local dealer checked out the AC power adapter and says it is fine...so the damage to the R-75 is internal and would have to be sent out to find out how extensive it is.

Do any of the members on here have any idea of how much damage I have inflicted on the unit? Have any of you ever done something this dumb? Lastly, any ideas on where I might send it for diagnosis?

Thanks in advance for any advise.

There is a fuse in the input near the back of the circuit board.open it up easy to find and replace.

Had the same issue with mine it's not just you. Never happens with my R8500 though. If the fuses are okay check the ribbon cables (near the center of the radio) to see they are seated properly in the connectors, wiggle them. That cured my problem. Just be careful as the ribbon wires are fragile.

R75 owners need to make sure the power cord is plugged into the radio before applying AC.

Good news! It's alive!

jack103 - located the fuse inside and although it looked OK, I had a spare that was included when I bought the R-75, so just in case it was bad, I replaced it with the spare.

woody_46 - did as you said and tried all the ribbon cables that I saw - gave them all a little push and wiggle even though they all seemed to be secure. Since I was inside the unit, I figured why not give it a try and see what happens.

So, you both get to share the credit and my sincere Thanks to you both. Now I've made a mental note to me: Pay attention!!

Thanks again,

Russell

Nice! In my case the fuse was fine. No idea why wiggling the ribbon cable works other than to clean any flashover when it arcs. Or maybe just a coincidence. It sure beats packing it up and sending it out for repairs though.

Those two members came through for me. After reading my post, they both offered a suggestion for me to try, since I had no idea what to do next. So I tried what they said to do, and can you imagine my total surprise when the unit powered up? I immediately jumped on RR and sent my results and my sincere thanks for both of them. Great guys they are!

Yes, rafdav - what a good feeling it was, and I did send my thanks to both.

highwayman1224 - take a lesson from me and don't do what I did...it's a terrible feeling.

I'm convinced that one incident like this makes the membership on RR worth the dollars spent.

Thanks for your comments, guys.

Something to note

I purchased used R75 a few months back and noticed the power would shut off at random times. I noticed the DC jack was a tad loose, as it would move a bit when the cable was plugged in or out. I pulled the main circuit board and found the DC power jack had a solder point that had broken loose. It appears over time the joint suffered fatigue from being plugged in and out by it's two prior owners.

A quick solder job reinforced the connector back to factory strength and I was good to go. I also noticed the fused link in the circuit as well.

I love my R75 and use it every single day and night:)

Good post! I had this issue also. The only thing keeping the power connector secure is the solder points on the jack itself. I'm not sure why they didn't use a clip or something to secure the jack to the case. It was an oversight I think. Something to keep an eye on.

Yes I agree. I noticed they use the same power connector on my R8500 receiver as well and it too can become loose over time if you're not careful with it. Actually that receiver has two different DC connectors. It utilizes the same one found on the R75 but also has a secondary four-pin molex type connector as well. Although I use the greatest of care when handling such expensive receivers, I've seen some pretty crazy things resulting from poor handling and the price of the radio doesn't seem to matter to some
