Here are the steps:

1. Unsolder the feet of the internal crystal unit, then remove it.
(No problem with this step)

2. Place the CR-293 in the space available as shown in the diagram, then solder its feet into place (6points).
(Got it)

3. Adjust the reference frequency using a frequency counter.
(What is the reference frequency?)

I've had a new in the box CR-293 for two years now and I'm leery of just installing it without the alignment. Should I just solder it in without aligning? Should I ship the radio and crystal to ICOM for installation and get the radio retuned at the same time?

Thoughts?

Canada, Eh!
I would send the radio to a professional to do the work, unless you have lots of experience soldering on tiny printed circuits. Alignment might be a problem too.

Just curious why you need the crystal. I have an R8500, and its quite stable, & precise. Is it required for test, technical work, or do you need exact readouts?

The main reason to install the crystal is I have it and why not get it installed into the radio. I can and do solder these types of things often.

You are correct in that I should have it done by someone else. I may as well send to ICOM and get the entire radio checked over at the same time.
