If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

We have newly purchased 3161S handhelds for our department, and Ive always used Kenwood, so this is a new step for me, however I cannot get the squelch to close on the channel we are going to use as our pager similar to a minitor etc. we are toned on 457.9, and receive on 154.355, however the channel remains wide open, and I dont want to hear the other 17 department on this freq, any ideas?

Look for a line called "CH Mute" on the channel list. You want it to be "AND", meaning that you need a valid PL -AND- 2-Tone code for the radio to unsquelch. OR would be either one or the other condition.

i'm having a similar problem...

i have RX PL tones set and the channels are still wide open. my settings are set to "OR" and even when neither the 2-Tone or PL tone are present, the channel is still open. in my case, two different counties are dispatching on the same frequency, with different PL tones. i have 2 different channels, one for each county, but i can still hear both counties on both channels. any ideas?

(i have the portable 3161 and the mobile equvilent 5061. same problem on both radios)

Curious if this problem was resolved.

I have the F3161DS. I have been trying both 5 tone and MDC1200 and cannot get the channel to mute. 5-tone and MDC databurst Tx OK but the channel stays unmuted. CH Mute OR or AND don't seem to make a difference.
