Has anyone worked with an Icom IC-7300 in AM mode? I'm hearing that to make them sound good on AM you need to reduce power to 60 watts or less and keep the mic gain cranked up to 50 or more. Just looking for anyone that has any insight working with this radio on AM.

Thanks,

Exactly, that's why I'm wondering why turning the power down to 60 percent (I wrote watts before but I meant percent) would help somehow. I've heard this from several sources and I have no idea if it's true. Several posts I've read say the IC-7300 is a bit of a dog on AM. I'm just curious and trying to understand how this particular radio works.

I’ve tried to get my 7300 to sound as good on AM as it does on SSB but it just can’t do it. Tried every mic combination, EQ and power level. Most amateur HF rigs are AM modulated at a low level then amplified where great sounding AM rigs like many CBs are high level, directly modulating the final stage with an adequate amount of audio power. The 7300 is an SDR and its DSP modulation is a basically a computer simulation of whatever transmit waveform you select but I think they could have done better.

Copy that, that’s what I’ve heard. Well, it’s a great radio on SSB so I guess that will have to do.
