Everyone,

I've considered for quite a while purchasing an Icom 756ProIII for use as a SWL/UTE HF Monitoring receiver, due to it's extensive bandscope, dual VFOs, and of course the bandscope. For the price, and the looks of the features, it certainly looks to be a good deal compared to, say the new R9500.

Is anyone using the 756Pro as a SWL/UTE receiver? Would it's RX only performance be worth be plunking down the change for something like that for receive only?

RE: ICOM Pro3

Lindsay,
While 26 or 27-hundred may seem like a lot for recieve only, you will be amazed at the recieve capability of this radio! Beautiful audio quality that you can tailor. You can use whatever digital filters you choose to fight interferance and enhance reception amidst all kinds of noise. The adjustable notch filter and twin passband adjustments will bring just about anything out of the mud. If you want one of the best recievers this is it. And the bandscope...wow...you can get a visual fix on where the signals are, where the noise is, you name it. Of course, it might even inspire you to study for your ham ticket, which you will love too. As we approach the next solar cycle peak in a few years you'll easily work the world. Good luck on your choice and 73!

I have been using a 756Pro for a couple of years as an HF receiver and it has been fantastic. I have had many other dedicated HF receivers over the years and the 756Pro is the best. It is my every day receiver and ButchGone's comments are right on target. Completely flexible filters and the DSP notch and noise filters both work great. Once you use the bandscope you won't be able to live without it. Plus, there are a lot of great software packages that you can use to control the radio.

The ultimate HF solution that I have found is to pair the 756Pro up to and SDR-14 and use the SDR14 in HF tracking mode.
This allows me the see wide bands (or even the whole HF band) with the SDR14 and then I can click on a signal to tune the 756Pro. I then use the 756Pro's controls (filters, passband tuning, noise reduction) to make the signal sound the best.
Makes finding signals easy, and they sound great to listen too.
