Hi. I currently own an Alinco dxr8e for MW and HF dx and an AOR 8600 for vhf/uhf dx. I'm considering trading these in for a 2nd hand like new Icom r8500.Has anybody got any suggestions as to whether this would be a good move or not? Would it perform as well or better then my current set up in the respective frequencies mentioned. Thanks.

Technology is changing. But I am assuming that your like me. Not being able to purchase new and latest. I happen to buy the ICOM R-8500 years ago. But I found that the unit drifted a little in the higher range and I need the stable crystal upgrade and the default filter capability seems lacking. Maybe you might upgrade to later version of present AOR radio.

Having had both Icom and AOR, I'd keep the AOR and Alinco, I think you're better off having a dedicated VHF/UHF & HF rig as oppose to having both combined. Plus you have a portable unit right now in the AOR if needed, the Icom 8500 is a boat anchor and don't expect to ever move it.

I would also keep your current radios.

Alinco has a better hf receive then the Icom.

I have owned a Icom 8500 and currently own a Alinco dx-r8.
The alinco is a hot receiver for the price.

Between the built in preamp the if shift and the rit you have a better chance of hearing that elusive signal.

Hi main intrest for me is monitoring aircraft I do have both receivers and performance is excellent youre better off having 2 receivers and its easier to monitor lots of signals then rely on one to do every thing.
What antennas are you using for hf & vhf..

Regards Lino..
