Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

How do I identify the firmware in my IC-6061D. I was able to read the radio with software ver. 5.3, There is no reference to the Firmware version that I could find. I can not write to the radio. I get an error message that tells me to update the firmware. I called ICOM and they told me the info, software and firmware are ONLY available to authorized dealers. I also have a IC-5061D that I could not read. Maybe locked???? Any ideas?

There have been numerous firmware/software updates on these. If you don't have the updated software for whatever firmware is in the radio it will not write. There is no way around that unless you get newer software.

To find out your radio firmware, Hold down the P0 and P3 buttons while powering on.

THANKS TO YOU for your info, it puts me in the right direction.
I have 2 IC-6061D bought new They have 2.3 Firmware. Came with ver. 5.0 software
I also have a Used IC-5061 which I was able to ID, as a Rail Road model with 3.1.1 RR
I just purchased ver. 5.3 software.

IS THE SOFTWARE FOR THE RAIL ROAD 5061D different from a regular mobile model. or do I need a RR version.
Can I change it to a mobile radio by changing the firmware? Now I have to get the correct firmware for the 3 radios.
Any suggestions on how to proceed??

Thanks Again MIKE

Yes, a RR radio needs RR programming software. You can load non-RR firmware into your RR radio to convert it to a non-RR radio, or you can load RR firmware into a non-RR radio to convert it to a RR radio. When you do the conversion, your newly-converted radio will flash and give you a CLONE NC error; this is only because the radio has the wrong profile type for the firmware (ie. non-RR radio with RR firmware). Just program it with the proper software and it'll be fine.

Not in the procedure itself, but since you're in the USA and are a ham, you'll want to use the latest firmware version that doesn't force narrow-band operation.
