A local Ham is selling an IC-706 original. It has been a while sine I bought an HF radio. I been mostly above 30 Mhz. He is asking $350 and it is in working condition as evidenced by the video he posted. My question is, should I jump on it at that price or go higher to the MKII/G models? It will be strictly for HF, not anything above 30Mhz. I have seen different reviews online, but I would like some opinions on this model from anyone who has it or has had it.

Thanks.

I had one years ago and used it mobile mostly on 10 and 6m. Worked fine for that purpose but traded it in for a MKII in order to get more output on 2m. Since it is a compact rig there are logs of menus that you'll have to learn how to navigate. One thing I found, which is true of the MKII as well, is that it drifts a bit if you're using it for digital modes like FT8 so there is a modification to make the internal fan run at a low speed even in Rx mode that helps smooth that out. That's not an issue on SSB. I think the 706 was "the" compact rig to have when it first came out. One last thing, older rigs can develop issues as their electrolytic capacitors dry out. Not saying that is always the case but it does happen. I'm still using my MKII (not G) and it works fine, never had any issues.

I have had a 706 since I got my extra a couple of decades ago. I don't use it as much now as I used to, but it was a real workhorse when I used it regularly. I've enjoyed it enough that it's not a radio I'd part with. I think that's a fair price and you'd enjoy it a lot.

I have the original IC-706 that used a few years ago for mobile HF, so really didn't need VHF with having another radio to use for VHF/UHF FM.

Purchased it used and never had any issues with it running on hamstick antennas. Still own and it not currently on the air.

I had a 706 in a vehicle, then ultimately replaced it with an MKIIG. Both are fine radios for their time, the MKIIG's DSP features and higher power output on VHF/UHF make that model more desirable.

My 706 MKIIG is getting rather old and should be replaced. Issues are cropping up, like it's not turning on the first time, every time, etc. It's also just a well-worn rig since it's 25+ years old, I'd guess, and has been well used.

I recommend spending a bit more and buying something newer.

I have a original 706 I bought 20+ yrs ago for $400.
A great radio that was dated even then. Still have it and use it.

But that's way too much money for something that old.

Get something newer.
