Icom IC-R1 Receiver

Hello everyone, I have a question I hope you can answer for me..

I have just purchased an Icom IC-R1 receiver on E-bay. It was a bit've an impulse buy and although I have been planning on buying an Icom for sometime to pursue my Aviation hobby I didn't really have a chance to fully research the model (perhaps foolishly?) before I took the step of purchasing..

My question is; Will the IC-R1 be able to monitor Aviation traffic? Obviously it's not a transceiver and I will only be listening-as long as I can tune into aviation channels and listen I will be happy.

I took a look at the Icom site but it seems the R1 is an older model and there isn't much there on it.

The R-1 covers both the VHF and UHF aiband allocations.

One interesting frequency is 123.45, which is the unofficial air to air frequency. Sometimes there are some interesting conversations, to say the least

IC-R1 is a great receiver

I had one but, sold it. Sorry I did. I bet you bought yours from an estate-sale, $125?. I saw it on ebay too.

The bad part is, the IC-R1 is a little wide in the front end and susceptible to adjacent channel splatter. The good part is, the IC-R1 was not cellular blocked (at least mine wasn't).

The rest of the radio is great. Well built (solid), small and has a built-in clock. I used to set the clock's timer as an alarm clock. It would wake me up in the morning to the sounds of traffic helicopters buzzing around the local freeways.

Have fun with your new Scanner and don't sell it.

Icom R-1

Sirs; I have both a blocked and unblocked version of the Icom R-1 and I will not part with either one!!!! However, if you would go to any hamfest you will find ther book RADIO TECH MODIFICATIONS and in it is the way to "unblock' any Icom receiver and re-install full 800mhz coverage. Yes the front end is a little wide and in the scanning mode it will lock up in the presents of a strong signal . But hey other than that, its a Damn good little radio!!!

Hello Bisquit Chucker; You made a fine choice in purchasing the Icom R-1 receiver. I don't think that you will be disapointed!!!!If you understand the radios limitations you will do just fine!!! Its a very sensitive radio, a stubby antenna inplace of the regular rubber duckie may help in those signal crowded areas by cutting down on the sensitivity. Its not a bad short-wave receiver either!! I know I have two of them!!!

Caution: some things to look out for.

The antenna jack is weak (inside the radio). Be careful and treat it delicately. Don't pick it up by the antenna, allow the antenna to be "whacked" around, plug in an external antenna and allow the radio to be positioned in a way that stresses the jack, etc. I put an over-sized antenna on mine to pick up the 40 - 45 MHz range. The antenna weighed more than the radio. Eventually, the antenna jack broke internally.

The battery rails are very weak. The battery slides on from the side via rails/slots built into the radio and the battery. The rails on the battery are plastic and the rails on the radio are metal - bad combination. DO NOT DROP the radio. Don't try to force the battery on the radio if it is not sliding on properly. Even bumping the radio while carying it on your side can cause the battery to break off. I have gone through several batteries because of this issue. It was this problem that caused ICOM to use a different battery design on later models.

A note: The accessories on the R1 are the same as the accessories on the Icom IC W2A Amateur radio (with wide band receiver) model (and a couple of other models, as well). Therefore, batteries, chargers, battery cases, etc., are all compatible.
