No its really not that hard of a radio to use. The manual is a little confusing but after reading through it a few times you will begin to understand.

Working with these receivers is similar to constructing a building. Start building the foundation with simple tasks requiring only a few steps. After you get familiar with these, you can move on to features of the unit, but only one at a time. When you have the basic tasks mastered, decide what features you will reasonably need to perform on a regular basis. Practice and master these. If the scanner starts to get to you, put it down for a while. When you go back to it, what you thought you did not know will be crystal clear.
There are features on my units that I rarely or never use. If I feel the need to, the instruction manual can be used. Try to be patient. The skills will come to you and you will wonder how you got them. Remember, only one step at a time.

All Icom manuals are weird! But once you forget what you know about "scanners", and learn the Icom way of doing things, it's not too bad.

Bob Parnass wrote some great programming software for the Icom IC-R5, for Windows, Linux, and Mac.

getting there

the icom ic-r5 and my self are becoming good friends after a slow start.the manual does talk of things as if you allready know somethings about the scanner which leaves you with no where to go on from, but as time goes on its getting easyer, and once you have done the same task a few times things fall into place

many thanks for the offer of help (it may still be needed)

Icom ic r2

Worst manual i have ever tried to read. Radio to Complicated to program and use. To many function buttons. This radio sits and gathers dust. Using computer software makes it a little easier.

edit - lol - never mind I thought you guys were talking about the R-75. The manual sucks for this one too... :)

Now, to turn my display resolution up...

Parnass still has the software but his links for cables are old. Blackbag is no more.
Purple is not selling directly and doesn't have an email contact.
This may be helpful: http://www.ic-r5.com/cableicr5.htm

Does anyone know for sure of a Macintosh to R5 cable?
That would be USB.
