I got a question regarding of the Icom IC-V82 for those who know about that radio or even use it before. I know that you can transmit and listen within the 2m frequencies (144-146 Mhz). Here is the question I'm trying to get an answer from. I look at the specs that it can receive from 137-174 Mhz. Does that really mean that you can really listen outside of the 2m band like the 160-161 Mhz (knowing that you can't transmit outside of 2m band)?

Absolutly correct!!!

In addition to many of the local 2m repeater and simplex frequencies in mine, I also have many analog public safety frequencies, rail road frequencies and a few others as well programmed so I can monitor them too when the ham band may be quite.

Darn TRACE that looks like a SAC patch.

Actually it's a "In Memory Of" SAC patch... ;)

Yes, I was SACumsized years ago and now SAC is no more. Spent 6 years as a Security Police out in the missile fields on the great plains of South Dakota.

I need a good, honest opinion. How good is the reception of the radio when you are in the Ham Radio Frequencies and when you are receiving the overall VHF Frequencies?

Which antenna would you recommend for that radio? I just got my Tech license this morning and I already have an IC-V8 radio that I would love to use.

Thanks in advance for the help.

First a correction. The 2M band is 144-148 mHz, not as stated by the OP above.

You can find tons of information about HT antennas on the websites of the various ham radio stores, such as HRO, AES, etc. Google will list them all for you. Problem with HT antennas is that the VHF ones tend to be too long to handle conveniently (about 19 inches) so constantly loaded "duckies" are employed. On UHF the quarter wave is about six inches to you can get a more efficient antenna and it takes up less space and doesn't poke you in the eye or under your arm when carried. Until you get enough info to decide whether or not you need another antenna you'll do fine with the one that comes with the radio.

The stock antenna isn't bad, considering most HT antennas. I got an Aftermarket Opek antenna that works great! Cannot remember the model number; but it is electrically a 5/8 wave.

It is single band... if you have a single band radio, then stay with the single band antenna... I have found dula band ht antennas lose performance.
