    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Icom iDas repeater questions

Hi everybody,

I just recently erected a 100' tower for our repeater. The repeater consists of a UR-FR5000 unit for UHF connected to a C4 commercial antenna.

My question is, I would really like a way to connect this unit to the Internet in hopes of one day connecting to it though my iPhone and communicate via VOIP to my repeater. Is this even possible?

Also, can I use the Internet to transmit messages to my radios like addresses for my clients and info. Maybe even receive GPS coordinates of my fleet?

Look at one of these.

Icom-America Systems has everything you want- the iDAS FR's are designed for all of that.

Also, look at the JPS NXU-2A Raytheon Company: NXU-2A Network Extension Unit They are slick and work well. I access mine using a client on my PC- don't know about iPhone apps, but JPS can tell you.

IAS's stuff handles all the iDAS data, while the JPS NXU only handles voice. I don't connect directly to the repeater (no Internet at the site). I plug it in to a portable that accesses the repeater.

I was under the impression I absolutely needed to stay with icom hardware to get what I want.

Since this is all new to me can you guide me through it? Price, equipment necessary, maybe an idea how it all plugs together? I can work out the details but I am completely lost at the moment LOL

What other cool things can idas do? Seems very powerful but very few documentation

The NXU connects to the speaker, mic and PTT. COR is nice, but not necessary. That's all there is to it. It's universally connectable, same as their voting and gateway equipment. It's all IP from there on out.

iDas GPS is sent as a part of the digital string and most of the iDas radios can grab it and hand it off to a third party tracking software.

Also, Icom has their VE-PG2 LAN interface that connects any radio (or FR) to another VE-PG2 connected radio (or FR) anywhere via a LAN (or really-anywhere via WAN through a VPN). The VE-PG2 can also directly connect to a VOIP phone for outbound calls and inbound via ring-then-talk. I'm finishing up a three repeater interconnect via the Internet this week. Pretty slick box.

Tessco has the JBS line, and Icom stuff is available through the dealer network.
