I heard they have a new digital scanner coming out. Said it was in the November issue of Monitoring Times magazine. Anyone know anything about it?

Icom is running what they call D Star for digital. Alinco is running another type of digital. Motorola has APCO 25. Wonder why Icom and Alinco didn't opt for the P25 standard. Would have been nice...

Would have added another $250-ish per radio for the licensing fee. And since they don't trunktrack to begin with, and the market for ham radio transmitters that also get trunked systems is miniscule, there's no reason for them to...

Over here.
Is there any reason in particular why Icom doesn't make an APCO-25 trunktracking scanner? Something comparable to the PRO-96/2096 or BCD396T/BC796D?

Because the scanner field is not an easy one to get into with the two big players firmly established. So they'd have to spend all that money investing in the resources to get something out the door, and it's not worth it financially.

scanners are a very small market. This is why Icom and AOR have not had any interest in it. Wide band receivers has a world wide market and will support high end receivers.

Pay uniden for what patents? If GRE had to pay uniden for patents it would raise the cost of production so that they could never compete against uniden for producing scanners for Radio Shack. Radio Shack continues to buy from both uniden and gre based on price and features.

I think the problem is that ICOM Japn did not do any research on the the digital modes that would be welcomed. I also think ICOM is going to fall flat on there face with this one. We will see what happens.
