Silent Key
With the recent flood of ICOM PCR-100's from eBay, numerous RR members have acquired this neat communications receiver for the first time. Being obsolete, it's initially frustrating trying to find software that is compatible with it. The original ICOM software, while still available, is somewhat limited. I did an extensive Google search and found the following:
IC-PCR100
The original software suppled by ICOM when you purchased a PCR-100 new. I've found v 1.0, and 1.1. It's interesting to note that v 1.0 works fine for me under Windows XP, however v 1.1 does not. It gives consistent communication errors. I've been unable to determine if there is any cosmetic, or functional difference between the two.
IC-PCR1000
The original software supplied by ICOM when you purchased a PCR-1000 new. I've tried this with the PCR-100 and it works. The PCR-100 does not have CW, or SSB modes, so obviously those modes do not work if you attempt to use them on the PCR-100. All other features of the software appear to work fine, and some might find this a little more desirable than IC-PCR100.
PCRScope
This is a discontinued application (1998) written by Pieter Ibelings for the PCR-1000, but also works with the PCR-100. It provides a configurable spectrum analyzer screen for seeking out frequencies.
Spectrum Analyzer GM
As it's name implies, this is another spectrum analyzer written by Colin Campbell, for the PCR-1000, but again, also works with the PCR-100. It has the ability to setup two different sweeps, and alternate between them.
TalkPCR
TalkPCR is a full-function programmer/controller package developed by Pete Mahy, for the PCR-1000. Like all other software I've tried, this too works for the PCR-100. However it's been discontinued, but you can still find it on the web.
TrunkPCR
TrunkPCR, is the most recent software available, developed by Jay Bray (aka; Crazy Californian). It is very similar to the obsolete TalkPCR at first glance, but goes far beyond in capabilities, and features, including trunking ability! It appears to use the trunking features you have to add the discriminator tap mod to your PCR-100, but that is not extremely difficult, just intricate. There is also the ability to use two radios with this software, but I haven't read up on how that works, or what it does yet.
What is really cool about TrunkPCR is that it has the ability to directly import frequencies and related info from Radio References database, similar to how Starr's, and Butel's software does!
TrunkPCR is so feature rich, at first I was intimidated and overwhelmed by it, but later decided this was the one to have! I sent my donation soon after. Great job Jay!
