Greetings Icom users,

I have what may seem like an odd question.

All things being equal, as in price, condition, and so forth, would you purchase the R7000 or the R7100?

I would be using the set primarily for VHF/UHF MilCom and aviation AM monitoring.

I realize that the 7100 has more memories, as well as a few other features, and would be, of course, a newer radio, but for reception performance, which would you choose?

I also know the limitations of each, as in sloooow scan-speed and "unscannerlike" usage oddities, nevertheless, I would like to take the plunge!

Thanks!

I have owned both of these in the past and my *personal opinion only* was that the Icom R7000 was a better receiver for VHF/UHF/Milcom. I thought the 7100's front end was a bit too wide.

The R7000 CRTs are no longer avalible, and the LCD replacemets are about 1000.00 dollars to replace.

I have had a R7000 for years and mine does not have a CRT. It has a Freq display and a lighted signal/tuning display. I also have the R7000-TV module but that just outputs to any video monitor.
It's only minus is a lack of digital decoding.
I haveit hooked up to a rooftop discone (no comments please) and have great fun just tuning around and finding stuff.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the 9000? The 9000 CRT and LCD replacements were pretty pricey as I recall. The 7100 just came with a regular LCD display and the 7000 had a VFD display. Now I have heard about some of the older 7000 VFD displays going dim.

I've heard good and bad about both the 7000 and 7100 but I don't think you could go wrong with either one. I'd kind of like a 7000 to match the R-71A I have. That said, unless I could get one extremely cheap I'd just get a new (or used) 8500.
