Thinking of getting a desk mic for my ICOM 7300. One is Electret the other is Dynamic.
I am hoping that it has a bit more punch than the stock mic. Is the the Electret the same as the stock mic but in a desk mic wrapper?
How does the Dynamic desk mic compare.?
So any suggestions/ experience /comparisons between the three?

An aside... the ICOM setup as per the manual does a whopping 40-60 Watts out. Apparently thats normal. ( yes I have searched the forum on this....lol). Great radio none the less.

I have not tried the SM-50 but do have a 7300 and an SM-30. First you need to equalize the 7300 to get the most out of it so you have a good baseline to compare with. I don't have my 7300 settings handy but they are something like mic gain 50%, compression on, level 3, TX SSB eq bass 0, treble +4, TX BW wide. These settings for the stock hand mic (which will out talk just about any radio out there) are also perfect for the SM-30.

The stock hand mic sounds so good there is not a lot of difference between it and the SM-30 although the SM-30 sounds just a little cleaner. The SM-30 does have an additional gain control on the bottom and it is convenient for base station use, especially if you talk a lot or are a net control station, etc.

I have played with other mics on my IC-7610, which is very close to the sound of a 7300 and the Heil PR-781 can sound very good and the best I've tried so far is the Electro Voice RE-27ND.

I use the SM-50 on my 7610; have not tried it on my 7300, as I mainly just use that for digital work. I can say that I get unsolicited fantastic audio reports all the time on my SM-50, and comparing recordings between the stock mic and the SM-50, there is a world of difference. The Yamaha CM500 headset (which I use for contesting) is another that works really well with the 7300/7610.

As far as the power output, that is a well-known and documented "issue" with the 7300. There is a fix out there, but for 1/2 an S-Unit? Not sure I would bother.
