• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Not sure where you got the impression Icom can't repair that model. I had not one but two 501M's that the front panel plastic cracked and fell apart around the volume knob. Very strange indeed but regardless I pulled them and sent them to Icom for repair. Took a while, almost a month, but came back good as new.

i was told by a autherized dealer parts cant be done or aquired swap em out for new, i like and love my icom.

I think you'll find since those are low cost radios, they don't want to repair them. Bench time is often close to $100/hour and they probably don't stock the parts. They'd rather you buy a new one.

well i was asking for a cord for the charger cradle, they said oh well just swap em out for a different brand and different service, i love my icom, i contacted icom its under warrenty, the charger cable for the cradle was sent to me, they keep asking me the former icom autherized dealer to swap em out for 3 new radios, i dont want chinese made crap i want my japanese icoms, so i get what i want a simple repair, lol

i was asking if its worth me swapping out my icom for a no name brand and no name company like diga talk plus over icom, im still waiting for the info on why they want me to swap out, lol

Not sure I'd mess with the Cheap Chinese products. Most of them run on some really old version of Android and are just screaming to get pwned by some hacker, if not already shipped with malware pre-installed. That sort of stuff will eat up your SIM card allocation really quickly, and risk getting shut down by the carrier.

If you went with another brand, you'd have to go all in since they are not cross brand compatible.
501H's are on sale according to the Icom website for $199 through the end of the year. Seems like a good deal for a decent radio that's not a Chinese POS.

Sometimes the more expensive, higher quality stuff is cheaper in the long run. Disposable junk adds up after a while.
