So, over the last couple of weeks I’ve been hearing an aircraft working with ground units doing surveillance. The aircraft identifies as “Idaho 23”. I have unerstood “back in the day” that “Idaho” was FBI aircraft. From what I’m hearing, this entire operation sounds like it’s narcotics trafficking related. Like something the DEA showed be handling? Thoughts??

Back many years ago I flew in an aircraft that was part of a sheriff's office and had an Idaho call sign assigned by the DEA.
Edit: The call sign was Idaho and the last two numbers of the tail number.

Monterey County SO uses idaho 90 with their plane
Ok some thoughts...
In Socal... FBI aircraft use the ID "Ross", it's been many, many years sine we have heard "Idaho".
DEA and it's Socal task force units have been heard using the callsign of "Flint".
USCBP aircraft in Socal seem to have switched from "Omaha" to "Troy" recently.
Not sure why the feds like to use city names in the aircraft id's.
Do you see the aircraft doing orbits on adsbexcange.com upwards of 3000 ft and more.
These planes and helos all have very sweet video cameras now, and don't need to be very low like before.
There are also now "contractors" associated with the Air National Guard who also do the airborne tracking of dope trafficking and other nasty stuff. The funny thing is that traffic was all in the clear when recently monitored in central and southern California on the old CLEMARS channel 154.920 ( it will always be CLEMARS to us O.G.'s) they were at 14000ft and were heard over 125 miles away. The software/hardware suites on these planes is insane.
