what is so interesting about monitoring the IDEN Network?...i heard people around here talking about monitoring there system?...as far as i know it is just alot of Business applications (Ex: Plumbing, Construction and misc)
So what is the big deal with monitoring it?...

As said, iDEN is the technoly used by Nextel, and Southern Link (and their Canadian partners).

It is way more than business. There is planty of personal and governmental communications, as well as a little bit of Public Safety.

I don't know, other than wanting to know about things that could affect me (very close to home), I don't know what the big deal is about most of the listening going on.

I have heard and i am unsure if it is true, but the FBI in New Haven CT is on a Group of a sort, and they use the Nextel phones as their way of communicating,

it just makes me wonder what the platform of the System will be?
like how you monitor,

say you hear someone Say (35 me on my nextel) (police Dept)
How would you track that Specific Conversation? or would it just be whatever you hear basis?

You would neeed a receiver capable of the format.
You would need to know the group, private or phone ID associated with the unit.
You would need to be in teh same cell as one of the units in the conversation.
and you would need to do it all before they are done talking.

That and the legality.

The vocoder and channel coding is proprietary.
Questionable legality since it is used as a cellular service.
And what is the chance that there is a big enough market of people willing to put up with all the trouble to hear it. Listening to a "cellular" type system is very dificult.

You can always buy a service monitor for $20K to $35K!

But what about systems like, Multi-Net or Passport?....are those under paten too?...is that why there is no scanner to track them?

and the cellular design of the system (lots of cells, lots of handing-off, little communications per cell).

What company wants to build ands sell a scanner that everyone will hate because works so poorly.

As for Multinet LTR and Passport LTR,.. they are being worked on. Its a matter of the way those trs systems work. As for VSELP, iDen, from Motorola, The vocoders are super expensive, and the VSELP stuff is on its way out. iDen is also very proprietary. As to Provoice for EDACS,.. proprietary,... add in ESK... and you get the unmonitorable stuff. Things you will never see a scanner for civilians do- EDACS Provoice, ESK for any EDACS system, iDen, and VSELP from Motorola.
