I'm trying to identify the active talkgroups in Ames. This is really a major chore, but I'm one who like a challenge.

I'm glad someone is going to try and find the active ones. Most of the ones listed are from when I first identified the system back around 1997. I'm sure that many things have changed in the 10 years since then. Make sure you post your findings here or submit them to the database and I will get them updated in the database.

I intend to. I'm going to do Ames City first then tackle ISU. (Sort of Pun intended)

I noticed that Ames and ISU run on the same freqs. Does ISU just run off of the ames trunk or is there another control channel that runs the ISU TGID's. When i did a channel listen, i heard 2 control channels last weekend at the isu game.

The control channels are different on both systems. Ames uses 860.0125 and 859.0125 and ISU uses 860.5625 and 859.5625. The two 860 frequencies seem to be primary. I tried looking up the locations of each system and it looks like they are at the same site. The funny thing is the ISU system comes in better than the Ames does. It's weird, also one of the Ames PD TGs is on the ISU trunk it's Ops 2/57488.
I'm trying to make heads or tails of the non public safety TGs but it's not easy they aren't all that active, when they are it's generally brief. I'm going to keep at it though.

"Towers" (more properly, EDACS systems) have no direct relationship with talk groups. If an authorized user of any talk group affiliates with any given RACOM system ("tower"), then traffic for that talk group will be routed to that system, and any other systems that are hosting other affiliated users. That is why you will sometimes hear "foreign" talk groups appearing on your local system. Certain talk groups also may, under normal circumstances, have their traffic forced to multiple systems.

The biggest problem with Ames is that there are so many different things on the system. It's not just City/Public Works there are users going throughout Story Co. and what appears to be some commercial users as well.

I did a search today and found that the dsm tower picks up at least 30 different talk groups. The one i know that is on every tower is tgid #1. This is the racom company network. They do a roll call @ 11:45 daily. Interesting to hear where people are calling from. I know i heard a few from Souix City, a few from davenport, a few from waterloo and heard one as far as moline, ill. The cool thing is, they came in clear as a bell. Now that's a powerfull network to be repeating as it does

I'd be happy to provide whatever help I can - I've been monitoring Ames and ISU talkgroups for the past 2 days. I could share my notes.

They're not "repeating" in the sense that you mean. The links between systems are all hard wired fiber optic or equivalent. The switching center in Marshalltown has much more in common with a telco CO than it does with a radio dispatch center.

Very good PM me if you would like to discuss this or print the things here. If there is anything I can help you with let me know.

That would make a lot more sense. Didn't think wireless could repeat as far as that in that clarity.
