If China declares war, these ham radio enthusiasts could be crucial

TAIPEI, Taiwan —
On Tuesday nights, BX2AN sits near the Xindian River, motionless but for his thumb and middle finger, rhythmically tapping against two small metal paddles. They emit a sound each time his hand makes contact — from the right, a dit, or dot; from the left, a dah, or dash, the building blocks of the Morse code alphabet.

One item can put a stop to it. A RF jammer.

Taiwan inland is a mountainous country. Invaders would have a difficult time doing the hump across the island and trying to execute maneuver warfare.

The government of Ukraine banned the use of amateur radio the day of the invasion. The international radio community told us not to contact Ukraine stations and definitely not to repeat their call signs or locations. If you look at the Ukraine situation I don’t believe ham radio is that useful.

Yes, thank you for posting this. Always interested in seeing people in far flung lands making contacts around the world via radio. I did this myself while in the military, made contacts to nearby countries, but it was heavily restricted as direction finding equipment is always in use by someone, somewhere. When war breaks out, all options are viable to some extent.

I have heard a few stations on Worldwide 91 on DMR from Ukraine. Of course it isn't local ham radio, but digital via the internet.

The main issue in that case also, would be an EMP, at which case, solid state radio equipment would be gone. If that isn't the case, one would need the General class license at least, so you could use V/UHF anytime, but also 80 and 40 meters on HF. Even if power goes down, and you have means to charge a battery, you can run your rig barefoot.
