Interestingly one of the arguments is that parts for the broadcasts are hard to come by. I guess they never heard of PCs and software.....

Booooo! I figured this was only a matter of time. I wonder how many vessels only have traditional NAVTEX terminals? Cost could be a factor there.

Thing is, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility to refit a 530 khz AM broadcast xmtr and antenna for this purpose. Yes it's a bit of work, to be sure (likely new PAs, antennas must be bigger...), but it's possible. After all it's only 12 khz down. Would be an entirely fascinating project to do...Mike
