You know I've been thinking the same thing. It has been quiet all week over North Alabama. I went downtown this morning, and even traffic on the interstate was light. Niki's on Finley, however, was busy, and the food was great, as always. BTW, It's been a little over 3 years since I was sick, and today after "practicing" for a couple of months, was my first solo on the interstate. Maybe thats why it was so quiet!

I'll send over an ICE STORM - that should get things going!!

Remember the one in late February 1999 ? Now THAT was an ICE STORM... counted 163 vehicles in the ditch or median on I-65 from the Tennessee line to just northeast of Decatur.

Hey, Dave, we just had DPS make a bust on $15 seat belt warrant. It's always hot action down here in Prattville. :)

I remember vistiting a deputy friend of mine at the Autauga SO one day years ago. When I got there, he was just finishing up the arrest warrant for someone who wrote a bad check for $6.18! Yep, repeat offender....

Don't worry dude! In about fifteen more years, you'll appreciate those quite times!

Those quite times are for running scenarios in your head. Based on where your units are, what they are doing and what else is happening, ask yourself what you would do if "this or that" were to happen In other words, a unit has just checked out for a lunch break. What would you do if the officer walked into an armed robbery in progress?

Yep, this stuff is taught in the DPS Communications basic course.

Let me add a SCENARIO to the thread here as long as it's going in that directoion. I retired in 1991 as a Tactical Training Sergeant with 21 years in uniform. THIS actually happened in Alabama some 10 years ago and SHOULD be in the back of all LEO's minds...

An armed robbery of a convenience store was in progress when a detective in street clothes walked in to pay for some gas. A new detective on probation was with him and they immediately saw what was going down... radioed for backup and carefully observed the situation. The 'perp' was distracted by a refrigeration compressor turning on next to him and the hostage was able to get away and bail out the front door past the detectives. The perp fired one round and fortunately missed. The detectives held their positions and did not return fire at that time. About two minutes went by and the lead detective tried to have the perp put the Beretta 92 down, but no luck. THEN the detectives heard CLICK - CLICK - CLICK and the perp said, "^!%#$@, the damn gun's busted." Just at that moment, the rookie detective left his cover and advanced toward the perp and was immediately shot in the vest. The lead detective had an opportunity to return fire and did so, hitting the perp in the upper right shoulder and knocking the gun to the floor. The rookie was dazed but OK. Later it was found that the perp used THE DECOCKING LEVER on the Beretta to make it SOUND as if the hammer was falling... he was deliberately trying to draw someone out of their cover - and was successful.

This scenario is brought to the attention of recruits going through training with many departments as a reminder to NOT let your ears deceive you.

It always seems like the armed robbery rate goes through the roof around this time of the year. I remember when I was a police, around
this time of the year we would spend many a night staking out the local convience store watching the activity going on.

Actually, after 15 years of doing this, I still get bored. I guess scenarios are good, but when the poop hits the fan, instinct takes over and I handle the situation.... apparently well from the words of the officers out there.

Yes, armed robberies of business's and persons go WAY up during this time of the year. One of the news stations had a segment a few years ago titled "tis the season to be taken" and covered safety issues.

Well, Dave, you'd love it down here. Had a Subway held up a few nights ago. Prattville continued to dispatch non-priority calls right over the top of the officers responding to and on-scene of the crime. They never cleared the air at any time. Some of the boys rode around for a while looking for the guy but appeared to get bored after about a half-hour and went back to patrol, covering important calls like noise complaints and a dead racoon on someone's lawn. Yes, they actually dispatched a unit for that.

When I did Ambulance Dispatch, ( we had trucks in 5 states) I always preferred evening and overnight. Seemed like it was then we had all of the MI's and such.

Well, when I worked morning shift (2300-0700) they had proclaimed me the "king of death", since I always seemed to have the shootings and homicides. Lucky me!!!!???

Granted dayshift is not the most "happening" shift, but we do have our moments. Sadly, the three Birmingham officers that were killed in 2004 were working dayshift and just recently the Fairfield officer was killed on dayshift. :( :(

And don't forget... 712 ran more bodies than 765 did. I've heard that complaint too many times to count... from you know who. Looks like your "king of death" moniker has followed your career, Dave. :D

hahahah I feel exactly the same way... it's 4am on a monday/sunday shift and its dead. nothing, we've not had one arrest all shift. I've been bored to DEATH! Screaming arrest someone, chase someone, do something. Its too damn cold to do anything. I'm sick of reading the same news stories over and over again on the various news sites. so so bored.
