Over the weekend, we isolated a problem affecting P25 performance after upgrading to V3.00.00. During testing, we had a number of test modes that we used to adjust some parameters for determining the best mix of some complex and interacting factors. We finally settled on "Mode 3" being the mode that gives the best performance.

Unfortunately, this test mode was left in the public release version, and it defaults to Mode 1 (which provided frankly horrendous performance...a fact that did not go unnoticed by many of you). We will issue an update that will change the default mode to 3 (or just remove these hidden options altogether) but meanwhile, you can get the performance that most testers in open beta agreed was stellar by following these steps:
  1. Turn off the scanner.
  2. Press and hold down HOLD while turning on the scanner. The backlight will blink on the BCD996T and the BCD396T will sound some extra power-up tones..
  3. MENU --> SETTINGS --> P25 ADJUST MODE to get to the menu, then press 3, E to change to Mode 3.
If you've been regretting the upgrade, making this one change should go a long way toward changing your mind.

Also, in changing to support rebanded systems (or actually any system that uses a non-standard band plan in 800 MHz) the ability to automatically trunk track 800 MHz Standard systems in Control Channel Search mode was lost. After receiving a lot of feedback about this, we decided that it was premature to remove this funcationality. Eventually, as more systems reband, this feature will become less and less useful (as the scanner has never been able to automatically trunk track either rebanded or splinter 800 systems). But, we've decided that we will add Control Channel Search Trunking back into the feature set for 800 MHz Standard systems in a V3 maintenance release.

Finally, after a user reported that the AGC settings were not accessible using the remote head after the update, we actually found that the serial interface on the scanner would be locked up after attempting to access the function. Not fatal, as cycling power on the scanner restored operation, but this is also something we'll correct in the maintenance release.

This information is so new, we haven't had time to make a test plan and schedule for the next release that will include these corrections. I'll let you know when we expect to have the update out as soon as I can.

Meanwhile, thanks for sticking with us. As you see reports of people having any of the above issues, please lend a hand by passing this information along.

Re:

I have been holding off updating my 396 to this latest update because of issues noted. When will it be safe to upload this with these newest "fixes" to the digital decode issues? Or do I have to uploade V.3 AND this latest maintenance patch? Would love to do just one update that's got the whole enchilada.

Butch:
In the past, the releases have included prior updates, and I suspect this will continue. Do't look for the maintenance release any time soon, as they will test to make sure it doesn't wreck something else while fixing the known issues. My advice (as a V2.xx Beta tester) is upgrade to V3.00.00 now, check the P25 mode setting is at "3" and enjoy the improvements that are there now.

Paul,
Thanks for letting us know what is being worked on. One question I have is that if I want the control channel search to work again, do I have to go back to version 2? That function is something that I like to use and I really do not want to wait for a patch if I do not have to.
Please let me know.

Thanks again
Dave

V3.0.0 will not automatically track Motorola 800 Standard systems. The V3.x maintenance release will restore that function.

Does Motorola 800 Standard include the 3600 baud mixed analog/digital systems, which are considered Type II?

Does V3 give me any advantage over the latest beta version? I don't mind the hidden menus and if I set Manual 8 for decoding SAFE-T it works OK with minimal motorboating so far.

Yes, Motorola 800 MHz Standard includes all Motorola 800 MHz Standard systems.

Yes. It includes the ability to properly track rebanded systems.

FYI to people if your 396 is turned to a very low volume you may not hear the tones

My friends 396 I didnt hear anything but the Menu options were there.

Awesome! Please pass along my thanks to the team that spent the weekend figuring this out.

I find the Control Channel Search mode to be great fun/convenience when traveling. It is a low cost way to find and monitor TRS when you don't want to spend time/effort to program the system. And I totally understand why you are saying that currently, this feature only works on 800MHz standard systems.

But I want to double check, since I think either you might be making a short-sighted error, or maybe I don't understand how this feature works...

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but shouldn't the feature also work on other TRS bands? Or any other TRS that either has a 'standard' channel-to-frequency assignment (e.g. 800MHz 'standard' or 900MHz TRS) or one where this assignment is capable of being determined via the control channel (e.g. 380MHz TRS)?

Also once all of the TRS's around the country have been 'rebanded', won't the 'rebanded' systems actually be 'standard'?

Finally, I'm a bit confused about the release plan. Do you anticipate an 'accelerated' release to address the P25 test mode issue, followed by another maintenance release to address the Control Channel Search?

Or will the P25 test mode issue (along with other issues) be addressed together at a later release?

Oh, and one more finally, could you please post the V3 workaround within the V3 release notes on 'My Uniden'?

Thanks again for you effort and involvement on this issue!

Actually, kudos needs to go to one of you (sorry, I can't remember who). Saturday night I was sitting on the patio at a local night club waiting for the band to start and reading my email on my smartphone when I came across a post on one of the Yahoo! groups from someone who had caught the setting on his. I was able to tentatively check and confirm he was onto something before the band started, and the engineers were on this first thing Monday morning Tokyo time (about 7pm Sunday night, here).

As to automatically following a trunked system in C-Ch search, it will also work on the 900 MHz band (the only other one that has a standard channel plan mirrored by Motorola's control channel implementation).

Post-rebanding (whenever that actually happens) there will be a health mix of both "Standard" and "Custom" banded systems (with "Splinters" of some as-yet undefined ilk hanging on around the borders). Looking at ways to keep some functionality on the future models.

Since there is a viable workaround to the RED issue (P25 degradation), we are going to shoot for a single release that incorporates all three adjustments.

I've got "Updating the Release Notes" in my queue, but it is behind at least one meeting (that might last until 7 or so, tonight).

Thanks for the response.

Moving forward, could you enhance the C-Ch search to include systems that pass channel plan information via the C-Ch?

I thought I observed that C-Ch operation 'worked' during a recent trip to San Diego. Isn't it possible to detect if a system is a splinter? At least if the c-Ch shows up on a splinter channel, then you know that the system is a splinter...

Only P25 systems pass the band plan via the C-Ch (and they already and still work). There is no way to differentiate Standard/Splinter/Custom/Inverted simply from the control channel.

That's the epitome of dedication! Tell your boss you deserve a raise.

Thanks for all you do, Paul. We're lucky to have you.

version 3, and a quickie question for Upnam re, CC c-channel only search feature

First off, a big thanks to Upman for the info on the update. I did switch to mode 3 and even though i have yet to see how this`ll shake out, so far things have been good post update on my `396T. Quickie question, i`ve been reading a lot of posts that make mention of some rather intresting features, namly the Close Call control channel only search, question is, is that one a feature that`s good on a `396T? Second, i assume that feature is different than the standard Control Channel only option for MOT 800 standard systems? is the control channel only feature the one that was accadently lost in the ver.3 update? I have several systems that i`ve set up with the control channel only, and i hope that option still works. Thanks! N9NRA
