Hello all,

I’m completely new to this and have a Pro-164 Radio Shack scanner. I live in Sacramento County. I have managed to figure out how to upload from the website what frequencies I would like. I’m only having one issue. For the Sac County Sheriffs I loaded the primary and alternate frequencies then most of the talk groups assigned to the sheriffs department. But, some reason I’m still picking up the public works, fire and hospital frequencies. Dose anyone have a file they can send me with the correct talk groups? I’m also looking to get Sac City and Elk Grove PD? If you don’t have the file how do I set it up so I’m just getting law enforcement calls? What I’m I doing wrong?

Thank you all in advance.

Greetings!

Sounds like you are new to the hobby - welcome and have patience!

Check to see if you are scanning in open or closed mode.
In open mode you will hear everything in the radio system, in closed mode you will hear only the talk groups you have programmed into the scanner.

Start here - Sacramento Regional Radio Communications System (Public Safety) Trunking System, Various, California - Scanner Frequencies
This will have all of the data you need.

Using your instruction manual, here is a basic set up

1. In one of your banks, program in all of the Site 2 frequencies
2. Then program all of the Sac Sheriff Talk Groups

1. In another one of your banks, program Site 1 freqs
2. Program the Sac PD talk groups

1. In another one of your banks, program Site 1 freqs
2. Program the EGPD talk groups

You can select which banks you want to monitor, either Sac Sheriff, Sac PD, EGPD etc
Be sure to scan in closed mode, only scanning what you programmed into the scanner

It sounds like you need to close that bank. Press the "F" key then the "." key and it should lock out that bank to scan only the TGIDs you programmed.

PRO-164 & Sacramento

Hello Aaron and welcome to RadioReference.com. Great scanner. Sacramento can be a little tricky to get set up.

But, some reason I’m still picking up the public works, fire and hospital frequencies.
The very top line of the scanner display shows an S meter and some misc icons. The next line is the first line of text. This shows which banks you have enabled. On the 2nd line of text, there are + & - symbols under each bank to indicate whether you have it open or closed. This sounds like you have the bank set to open. It also sounds like you used software to program the scanner. Make sure to select "closed" for the bank before downloading to the scanner.

Does anyone have a file they can send me with the correct talk groups? I’m also looking to get Sac City and Elk Grove PD?
I can do that as long as you are using WIN97 to program the scanner. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll email it to you. If you're not using WIN97 I can't help ya.

Also note that dispatch channels are on both "sites" - the county and city sites. But if you want other "specialty" channels, you probably need to pick them up from their respective site. For example, if you want Sac PD Investigations; you'll need to monitor the city site. Or if you want Sac Sheriff HIDA you'll need to monitor a county site. What this means is programming two sets of frequencies and replicating the TGs for each. Put each site into its own bank to make it work properly w/o issues.

welcome to the hobby. This area is one of the most scanner friendly in my opinion, in terms of the amount of traffic you can pick up on the scanner. :) You're going to LOVE this hobby. (your pocketbook might not though... hehehe)
