St. Johns County and the Florida Highway Patrol are working six crashes with several injuries on Internet 95 between County Road 210 and the Duval County line.
Most of the accidents have occurred in the southbound lanes, one of which had significant injuries and required one child to be transported by air ambulance.
The first of a series of accidents occurred about 1:30 p.m. after a rain shower moved through the area. More than one of the vehicles involved were part of a Florida National Guard convoy.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said I-95 is expected to remain congested for much of the afternoon and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.
