Just installed a surplus Middle Atlantic rack into the wall in my radio room. I wanted to achieve a neat appearance and still keep some of my rack mount items accessible. My radio room is next to some unfinished space on one side and I have plumbed all the equipment into that wall. Thought this may give someone a idea for a cool project that looks really sharp. We do these kind of in wall rack setups in homes for theater and house control equipment at work. I am in the process of making a hinged tinted glass door for the front of this rack....

Just out of curiosity, is there a place to mount a cooling fan in that cabinet? I can see the cabinet is well ventilated. I would think that the cabinet would have the tendency to store some heat, especially if the radios were in use for a period of time.

Yes it has knockouts in the top for fans. I plan on making some filters for the vented areas first before I install the fans to keep the dust and dirt from building up inside....

Nice, but how about some blank panels to fill in until you install more equipment in the rack? I've found that Sam Ash has great prices on rack panels, usually with free shipping.

The only problem with the large fans that you can order for that cabinet is they are large and make a bunch of noise. Your not going to need any where that much air movement to keep your equipment happy. I would look at mounting some 4 inch or smaller fans that are much quieter. If you can find the fans with the blades that are not flat and straight on the end, they run with less noise.

Curious, it lQQks like the space behind the rack backs up to an attic as I see an AC Flex-Duct ?
I would think if that's so that you would want to seal off and insulate the cabinet to keep out heat
and install ventallation that only circulates front panel side room air that is climate controlled ?
I would think small and quiet fans at the top to evacuate what little heat that rises to the top of rack.
I like the sharp custom flush look and especially the molding. The smoked glass door will be nice too!

ps~ I love those framed pictures on the same wall of the SR-71 and the Space Shuttle~ very cQQl :)

Thanks for the kind words, I plan to build a MDF enclosure on the rear of the rack and box it in, this will allow me to insulate the rack...
