• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Well, I got my G4 today, and I'm pretty much blown away. First off, simulcast distortion is 100% gone, all systems. Gone as in zero issues.

Deep inside of a metal frame office building, I can receive Simulcasts that don't have a tower within 10 miles, with the antenna off the pager, at about 2-3 bars. Inside this same building no scanner has a prayer of receiving those systems at all, regardless of what duck antenna you put on them, you can't even lock on at all with any of the digital scanners I've tried, and I've tried them all.

From what I've seen, the G4 will pull in systems at five bars at 4-5 times the distance from a tower that a scanner will (with antennas attached on both of course). The quality of the receiver, and the decoding, are truly amazing, and with the full size moto 700/800 duck antenna I bought attached, the range is even better than when using the stubby antenna. I would be surprised if a Motorola public safety two-way radio could receive much better than this little pager does in terms of pulling in distant signals and accurately processing them.

Obviously using a pager to scan has it quirk and irritations, but I'm already finding workarounds for most of them.

The one thing I have yet to figure out on day one, is how to silence that "unread messages" alert that sounds when that alert occurs (if it can be silenced). I also can't seem to find what the "yellow person" symbol at the top of the screen means, though it seems harmless. Other than that I think everything else is pretty well dialed in and figured out.

For anyone thinking of buying one for your local simulcast system(s), don't hesitate, you won't regret it.

Welcome to G4 perfect decode. The reception is truly amazing. The yellow person just means the radio is in service, not "off duty".

Thanks for that answer, I couldn't find it anywhere!

That just leaves one remaining question after the first day, and that is whether or not it is possible to mute the "unread messages reminder" alert, which is pretty piercing. There may not be a way to do it considering that this is ultimately a pager, and if so I would understand.

Edit: Found that setting too, I'm totally happy.
