If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

There could be several sources of the hum interference in your car. Alternator is a prime culprit as are the A/C-heater blower motor, fuel pump, fuel injectors, the ignition system (coils), or the computer.

You didn't indicate engine running of not, I assume running. What make and model car? If it's the alternator a suppressor is available. Also try key on, engine off.

I had a Toyota SR5 truck once that had a horrible whine from the fuel pump. Never did clear that up. Actually I did fix the problem by getting rid of that POS after a year. What a lemon.

Give us more info so that we can help you eliminate this problem.

What kind of vehicle do you have the radio mounted in?

- Use the noise blanker (NB) button on your radio if you have one. That will help.
- Mount your antenna as far away from the engine as possible.
- Toroid chokes with ferrite cores can also help. Place one on your red +power line to the radio. You can pick these up at a Radio Shack. They have different sizes and they clamp onto the wire. If the hole is big enough, wrap the wire through twice it will help. Some are two in a package, so use both on the wire. You could even try a few larger one's on your antenna coax.

This.

How is the radio installed exactly? If at all possible, run the radio directly off the battery. The battery will act like a massive capacitor. If that's not possible, run the negative line to the firewall and run the positive line to the fuse block.

In addition to those measures, you want to invest in a in-line DC noise filter, available at CB and ham radio shops and online.

What is the make and model of your CB? What's the make and model of your vehicle? Everyone says not to do it claiming more electrical noise, but I've had much cleaner signals when using an add-a-fuse and wiring the radios in car, than going direct to the battery.

You can also turn the radio on (and do NOT transmit) with the antenna off to see if it's antenna picking up the noise or if it's electrical. If it's the antenna life may be a little harder or you may just need to drive a little. Is it constant noise or is it changing pitch and or volume in relation to engine rpm? Does the CB have an RF Gain, is it maxed out, or can you dial it back to being between 50-80% and have a dramatic decrease in the noise floor making it easier to pick the signals out.

If your coax is running parallel with your electrical wires reroute the coax cable. If you are really serious about reducing it you can also buy a battery with the top and side posts. Put the vehicles electrical wires in the usual place and the CB radio's electrical wires on the other one. Made a noticeable difference in mine. :)
When I replaced my battery, the new one happen to come with both top and side posts. I was messing around one day trying to cut back more on the engine noise through my radio and tried it. I figured I had nothing to loose by trying it.
