Installing a scanner into a car

Just this week i got rid of my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee I jumped into a 2005 Honda Civic 4D EX 8) 8) (no I don't want to make it a rice rocket) But I have run into a problem with my scanner and it. You see I have the Uniden 796D with a speaker mounted on top of it, while this worked perfectly in my large Jeep it does not work at all in the Honda. There is no room to let it sit somewhere, and I do not want to perment install in the Civic. (More on that later) I have a few options:

#1 Buy a handheld and use that in the Civic.

#2 Buy a radio that will fit. And install that somewhere

#3 Run the car without one. :x :x

#4 Install smaller unit in the extra radio spot: Rigthe below current CD/Radio player See below:

#5 Install 796D on side of transmission area and buy a new radio for the house.

Those are my options I guess. I have a feeling that installing a radio in the dash would be a project for a pro (since I hate hammers and nails) I would like a radio with alpha tags on it so the BCT-8 is out I guess I could look at radio shack stuff but I'm not sure if the Pro-2067 has what I want. (Alpha must have and Digital kinda want.) The Pro-2096 has what I want but is kinda out of the price range right now. A handheld is nice (246T) I guess I could put some sort of mount on the car and the unit to make it fit.

I am open to idea's and pictures of mobile setups




here is the outside. Only Civic in town with a Antenex coffee cup VHF antenna and a Maxtrac pigtail 800mHz

I mounted my 246T in on the dash right beside the radio and ac controls in my Nissan Frontier with a cell phone clip you buy at Wal-Mart. It has a button type thing that can attach to the back of the scanner with the existing screws and then a sticky reciever type that accepts the button on the back of the scanner. Works great. Is up high enough I can read and semi-operate the scanner if needed.

I've had some really good experience with the PanaVise In-Dash mounting
brackets. It won't hold a mobile, it would be a good mounting device for a handheld.

It works great and only cost like $4.00. The only drawback is you loose your factory beltclip, but the $4.00 kit comes with a beltclip that attaches to the button

Nice looking Civic you have there. Lovin the color!!! I would go with getting a handheld and a clip on vent holder.

I found my clip on holder at an autoparts store. The thing works great for my radios, GPS systems and cell phones.

Here's the Watson QS200 A/C vent holder in a Ford F-150 truck. These A/C vent mounts are more suited to some types of A/C vents than others. This clip can be purchased from Scanners Unlimited.

If that opening below your current radio is DIN-E sized (7" x 2"), then you might be able to put a PRO-2096 in there.

I would go with (in this order):

#4/2 - PRO-2096 in the dash.

#5 - on passanger side of console

#2 - PRO-96 or BCD396T (from everything I've heard about it)

On my MINI Cooper S, I have a dash mat that has a vent hole in it, right next to the steering wheel. The Pro-97 belt clip attaches to it nicely.

Ahh! I have the perfect picture for you! I also own a Honda Civic, and this is what it looks like with a Pro-2096. The Pro-2096 will not fit into the dash all the way with a stock head unit, i eventually bought a new head unit and this is what it looks like now:

I like this. I had a vent mount one for my S-10 and it won't fit my Sierra now,
the vent flaps are too long for the clips to fit it. I may have to check into these. Any chance, you might know the length of the clips on this vent mount?

Here is the one I have. It's adjustable and it worked great in my S-10, just not for
my Sierra. May just use it in the wife's Malibu now?

HOLY CRAP $80 for a holder :shock: And here I thought the Watson QS200 clip for $16.95 was ridicules.
