Interesting - 450.2125

I am hearing some interesting stuff on 450.2125 in Salt Lake today.

A lot if misc audio clips from various TV shows and Monty Python.

There is just an open carrier with a tone of 173.0 and then these clips will play at what seems to be random times.

Anybody got any thoughts?

Doing a bit more searching on Google the ScanWare site is showing this Freq as belonging to KUTV and KALL radio:

I just heard them play the KUTV news jingle so...

Still not sure what it is being used for.

Try the media link at the bottom of the Database page for Salt Lake County. There are a number of freqs in the 450~451 Mhz range used as Studio to remote links for the local media.

Yep! There it is, just as gldavis indicated.

I love it when mysteries are easily solved. (Seems to be a discrepancy in the PL Tone, however.)

The best time to listen for these is while the news is on. I believe they refer to this type of operation as a "talker". You will hear ch2 also using 450.3375 with no pl, and ch5 450.2875 with a pl of 82.5. Ch4 used to have one in the VHF range, but I have not heard it recently.

In addition to 450-451 MHz in 12.5 kHz steps, the following VHF freqs should be included in the scan list: 152.87, 152.93, 152.99, 153.05, 153.11, 153.17, 153.23, 153.29, 153.35, 160.89, 160.95, 161.01, 161.07, 161.13, 161.19, 161.25, 161.31, 161.37, 161.64, 161.67, 161.7, 161.73, 161.76, 166.25, and 170.15.

Another good time to scan is during commute hours, when traffic helicopters are active.

Everything I've heard has been an exact duplication of 450.2125. Probably 2 different sites with the news crew choosing the one with the best signal. It's not just the audio from the program, you will hear them make comments to the reporters.

Thanks, kd7rto. I thought it might be fun to have the frequencies that the helicopters from Channels 2 & 5 use for traffic reporting on the scanners. I keyed in 455.3500 yesterday and heard "Eye in the Sky" (Ch. 5) reporting the traffic last evening and wanted to add Ch. 2's frequency. I wasn't sure if they used a special frequency for the helicopters.

I have 120.9000 programmed in which the medical helicopters use for getting instructions, clearances, and warnings of other traffic from the Salt Lake Center for their flights around the valley. If you are not a pilot it takes some listening to understand what they are saying. The communications are short, to the point, and laced with flying and navigation jargon. I'm pretty sure it is only the medical choppers and the tower on this frequency, but I could be wrong.

You raise a good point. I don't monitor 456-460 or 465-470 MHz, because repeater inputs are about all that they are used for. 455-456, is used for inputs, but there is also enough simplex activity to make it worth scanning.

Well, it's been kinda fun listening to the traffic reports from the "Eye in the Sky" on my scanner but today I had to lock that frequency (455.3500) out because in between the traffic reports, the pilot was having a conversation with someone in the KSL studio. Since this is a duplex system, the pilot would simply keep his microphone keyed and thereby locking my scanner on that frequency for the duration. I don't know what frequency the other end of the conversation was on, but I have no interest in finding out - which would be easy enough to do. Those times of day I want to be able to hear the public service channels, not be stopped on what amounts to be essentially a private conversation.

Too bad, really. It was kinda fun listening to the traffic updates and occasionally the pilot would make comments which were not broadcast on KSL about an accident or other things he could/had seen.

If only that was simplex.
