I'm learning quite a bit about my new MDT9100-10's that I'm going to be receiving soon. We got one in this morning and more are on the way..

In anticipation of the arrival of our new toys, I started a thread on the batlabs message board that has been quite educational so far. There may be a way to monitor a DataTac network with one of these!

For those that are interested, check out this link:

I'll be updating the readers there with my progress on turning an old MDT into a data scanner. It may work, it may not - no guarantees here, but it will be a lot of fun to try and I'm going to learn quite a bit in the process.

How hard is it to inhibit the transmit feature on an MDT?

Until I get a chance to play with one (hopefully this weekend) I'm not sure. It should be a simple parameter setting either on the unit itself or on the connected radio transceiver via RSS software. I'm hoping I can set this on the unit as I have no idea how to go about getting RSS - I hear that Motorola doesn't just sell that stuff to whoever asks.

I did find in my online travels this encouraging information:

From: http://www.batlabs.com/mdt.html
MDT9100-10 Test and service mode:

After unit boots up, push the "FORMS" key, then the "T" key then "E" key.

This brings up the service menu:

A P. O. S. T. test
1 EEPROM test
2 radio test menu (password 1-2-3-4-5)
3 Configure EEPROM (password 1-2-3-4-5)

1. terminal parameters
2. radio 1 setup
3. radio 2 setup
4. ACT parameters

4 software ID / version
5 keyboard test

You may need this programming dongle to access the test mode above.

Note option 3. I'm guessing somewhere in option 3's submenu is a way to kill the xmit or set it to a frequency that doesn't exist. I'll have to wait and see though. I'll post more info when I've had a chance to tinker with these things some.

Your right about the Motorola and the RSS,.. these days they do NOT just sell RSS to Joe Schmoe,.. both for thier Trunking stuff and the Data stuff as a lot of what goes on MDT's is personal info,... as well as the possibility that an MDT might,... just might be able to access encrypted data streams?????? So have fun and if your successful,.. and it turns out to be legal,.. keep us informed,.. as to if its illegal,.. well your smart eneough to know what not to do or say... LOL
