• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hello

I have a uniden grant XL, paired with a a solarcon A99, connected with 50ft of RG8X coax.

Every so often I get a very harsh static noise that will persist for about a week and then stop.

I have tried to locate the origin of the noise by taking my handheld CB and walking around the house to try and locate it, but have only been able to narrow it down to one end of the house.

I have been trying to figure it out for a while now.

Anyone have any ideas?

Could be, but when I get close to the power lines with my handheld it gets weaker. If it were the power lines would'nt it be a constant noise?

are you sure it's not a connection issue? Does it happen after rain or wind or heat or cold?
I had a connection that had been 'water proofed'; but 3 days after it rain, I would get crackling after I keyed up for a few days. Turns out some water got into it and would short just a bit.

No it's just at random. It does not happen after it rains or anything, it just comes and stays for about a week and then goes away. It has only happened 3 times so far.

And I have had it set up for about 6 months and we have had plenty of rain here in Arkansas lately.

I also forgot to mention that I can hear it just a little bit on my 2 meter radio as well, and I have my 2 meter antenna set up in the house.

Use a handheld with AM receive. Easier to track source, but you have to get close to the source. I use an HT with airband an a handheld 4 element Yagi.

Well that's sort of what I did with the handheld CB, but the noise is covering a large area. I did narrow it down yesterday to one of two things; one it might be the power lines coming into the house or the smart meter for our electricity that uses the Internet to transmit the data to our power company.

But that meter would'nt transmit a week at a time would it?

Tracking down RFI can be a challenge. The first thing, is to rule out a source within your house. Trip each breaker one by one to see if it vanishes. If that fails, then shut off the main breaker and hook the rig to battery power. If noise is present, then the source is outside the house.

Hearing this noise on VHF, means the source is very close. I'd like to hear a recording if you can post it.

What file extension will the thread take? I have tried m4a and mp3 but it won't take either of those.
