Hello all!

Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum and offer a great many thanks to all those (especially LarrySC) here for the great help you have provided in your postings.

After a few years of being a newbie, I finally jumped into the deep end and purchased a Pro-96 from the local 'Shack. I live in Greenville and have had great success with my new toy. There's so much to listen to and find. I will soon (hopefully) get down to Master's elect. and pick up that SC directory just to have a hard copy of local info.

From BJU to BMW and all the local digital traffic it sure is interesting to hear and see. I mostly listen to air traffic from downtown and GSP as well as Greenville area SD/PD/SCHP. Some commercial as well.

A few question do exist though....

What's the best way to setup your channel banks? By town or agency?
What's the optimum amount of control codes per bank? Any opinions?

Oh well, thanks for letting me ramble on and thanks again for the great content.

P.S. BTW, I picked up some gypsy traffic early today I think. It sounded like a phone message being replayed over the channel. It was some guy returning a call about having some work done on his house. I got the freq. from LarrySC's gypsy site on Yahoo. Sweet!

I set my PRO-96 up similar to Larry's.

I like for the banks to start with 1, so I do this:
0- Surveillance - FRS, GMRS, WTs, Mics
1- Spartanburg Public Safety
2- Spartanburg Local Gov't/Schools
3- Spartanburg Utilities
4- Spartanburg Business/Commercial
5- Greenville City/County
6- Cherokee/Union Cos.
7- WNC Border Cos (Polk, Rutherford, Henderson, Cleveland)
8- SC State Law Enforcement (Conventional only)
9- SC State Agencies (DNR, DHEC, P&R)

For talkgroups "sub-banks," I do this:
0- Spartanburg EMS/911
1- Spartanburg SD
3- SCHP Troop 3/4/2
4- SC State Agencies
5- Upstate Utilities

I also use v-folders quite a bit, and I've made separate configs for Greenville, Columbia, Charleston, Grand Strand, Beaufort/Lowcountry, WNC areas, etc.

For my Greenville Config, I separate Greenville Co and City into separate banks, and I add Anderson, Pickens, Oconee and Spartanburg as the surrounging counties. Surveillance, and 2 state banks stay the same from v-folder to v-folder.

Hope that helps.

Sounds good. I have several PGM's for each make scanner. Not two of my customers want the same PGM. The way to PGM is by area or by service. BUT you would be surprised how some of the manual programs look when they give up and come to me. Really would make you cry. I suggested to the media they set up one older computer with software for their scanners so they could manage them. Know what they said.? Well know one wants to do it so we'll just pay you a retainer each year. Works for me.

i am not certain on all, but my thoughts:

frs - Family Radio Service (i'm sure you know this)
gmrs - General Mobile Radio Service (i'm sure you knew this as well)
murs - Multi-Use Radio Service
color code - This is the Buss Radio, they use colors for channels
WT's - ???
fm mics - Fm tv mics? wireless mics?
etc
