Well we will believe when we see it. OCFA has been servicing the Irvine city limits since becoming a city back in the 1970's.
Santa Ana always had their own fire department and then OCFA took over and SA never looked back. So not sure why Irvine wants to have their own department. Most likely cuz they can't get their budgeting figured out and balanced. But Irvine city limits have become larger and larger. I think they have like 12 or 13 stations now. Could make sense now since they have so many stations
Apparently they had to give notice before June 30 in order to avoid being locked in until 2030. This still leaves them about 18 months to come to an agreement, during which time they could still decide to stay with OCFA.
Funny reading a lot of the responses on the OC Registers story. No pensions, 401K for firefighters. That would be a hard way to run a department. You would become a training department and it would cost you more money. Irvine is getting the short end with how much they are putting in compared to others.
