• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Canada doesn't do GMRS licenses like they do in the USA. If the radio is sold in Canada, you can use it without a paper license.

Does any of my Canadian brothers or sisters on the Lake Ontario shore have a GMRS radio and want to try to hit my repeater over here in Rochester,NY? I would imagine you would need to be fairly close to the lake but I am up high over here near Rochester. let me know if anyone is interested and I will give you the details. I talk all the time to my Canadian friends on the Ham bands.

Wouldn't they need to be licensed, as transmissions are going through a US repeater? The no Canada license only applies to use in that country.

Not sure on that. I thought Canada had reciprocal GMRS licenses Like we have on Ham.

Yes, you will need a license to sell these radios to the rest of us if you do routinely get that 30-Mile Range😀

Nope. And the GMRS service isn't the same as it is down here. They have 22 simplex channels, the 467MHz repeater input frequencies are not included in their GMRS radio service.
are You allowed to set up GMRS repeaters in Canada? Also what are the GMRS frequencys used in Canada?

I'm in the US, so I'm simply looking at the rules posted on the Canadian government site.

It does not list repeater pairs, and the frequencies used for repeater inputs in the USA are not permitted in Canada.

My understanding is that Canadian GMRS standards are equivalent to FRS in the States. Simplex communication is allocated on channels 1-22. Maximum legal output power is 2 watts (not sure if Canada has the 500-milliwatt restriction on channels 8-14 like in the U.S.). No license is required. Operation is limited to handheld simplex transceivers (no mobile or base units), and half-duplex repeater operation is not allowed.

What we call FRS Canada calls GMRS. Same standard, different name.
