Is Colonial Heights encrypted, or just quiet?

Does anyone know what's up with Colonial Heights? I finally figured out the RS Pro-96 (I think :? ), but I'm not getting nearly as much from Colonial Heights as I would expect.

They're apparently still on the Henrico-Richmond-Chesterfield system, and I hear their dispatch talkgroup occasionally, but not much else.

Did Colonial Heights go encrypted? If so, is it just them? I'm still hearing tons of fun stuff on the rest of the regional systems.

Are you listening to the control channels for all localities in the same bank? Colonial Heights TG's are generally engaged only over the Chesterfield CC's.

In my PRO-96 V-scanner file for the Tri-Cities area, I generally lock out the Richmond and Henrico control channels so that I won't miss traffic from Colonial Heights.

I agree with Allen that you might be missing some of the traffic due to the more active jurisdictions that are on the same system. However, CHPD and CHFD are fairly busy, given the small size of the city, and I've never found there to be a lack of activity.

I do know that at one time CHFD Admin was encrypted, but not sure about PD, as I mainly listen to FD stuff.

I think I've got it...

I just learned how "closed mode" works. Once I told the Pro-96 to exclusively pick out the CH talkgroups, they're not being drowned out by everyone else.
I've got it set up with only the Chesterfield control channels and only CH talkgroups in Bank 0, and all the area control channels programmed but the CH talkgroups locked out in Bank 1.
With ten banks to fill and only 6 systems I want to scan, I can afford to spread everything out.

Here is another strategy to keep out unwanted traffic.

Colonial Heights has been heard with TG's as low as 27408 and as high as 27952. Try also loading in the unused TG's in this range and see if anything new pops up. This will allow you a lot of flexibility in deciding what you do and don't want to monitor, but will make it unnecessary to lock out all that other stuff on the Chesterfield CC.

The fleet manager for Suffolk set TG's at intervals of 32, though some are rarely used. PD has a regular group of 8--of which 6 are talkarounds--followed by another group of 8 for Tac and training, and a couple of the latter are used for mutual aid. FD is the same, a primary group of 8 followed by Tac and training group which includes mutual aid. City Services have only 9 TG's that I've ever heard. The school board office and building inspectors use I-Calls at times. Finally, the Sheriff Office has a group of 8, mostly court's, lockup and court order service.

A couple of months ago, I heard a Fire/EMS person make an I-Call phone patch to a friend. Apparently, this guy was in a bar and using his radio he patched a friend, giving details regarding a lap dance he was getting. :lol: I hope he was off duty.
