• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Is it likely my SWR meter is wrong? Opinions

Yes, the home-made approach is definitely an option--good learning experience and satisfaction with doing it yourself. Although lacking a machine shop, I'm not sure how the efficiency/quality compare.

Thirty dollars might seem like a lot of money, although with antennas being the most important part of any radio set-up--and compared to the costs of things like beam antennas and so forth--it might be money well spent.

I've kicked around the idea of buying the Deluxe 11 meter dipole with the balun, good wire and insulators for 49 bucks just to compare performance to my own builds.

Talked in town to the target base station last night successfully! Not only that but I talked to my son for 4 miles in my mobile. He was using the new antenna. My mobile is totally barefoot.

You put the research and effort into it and came up with the solution.

Good job

Thank you. It required starting from scratch and re-tracing steps based on what the science said, but I put in the work and made it happen. It took a total of three installations to get it right, and I went through a lot of zip ties in the process, but I got it.

I forgot my roll of 12 gauge wire in town so I had to improvise. I had dual 18 gauge speaker wire, and that's what got used. As soon as the weather is better, I'm going to re-make it again with better wire.

Speaker wire works, though, and decently well.

I'm also heading to lowes to buy a PVC pipe and caps so that I can build a balun. My research suggests that I can do it with 18 to 21 feet of coax wound around the pipe. That'll be my next project. I will be curious to see if a balun improves antenna performance in a way that I can distinguish.
