a local radio shop has a older bc898xlt for $100 but the display is out , is the radio worth getting or would the cost of a display repair make it not worth it

No way. Radioworld lists them at $285CD. For a non-digital, broken, Trunk-TrackerIII, save your beans and get a BCT15 if you don't need digital, list $300CD

An off-the-wall thought, and this will still be difficult without the display.....
If they are willing to sell it as-is for less than 1/2 that (I'm thinking $30) you might be able to hook an old PC to in and run it that way (you'd have to guess as to when the radio is in PC control mode during initial set-up but after that you can run all the displays via the PC including alpha tagging which the 898 does not have.
Heck, for $30 you may be able to cover the display replacement.

Probably not, why not give Uniden a call and ask them for a display cost?

Yeah, we're on the same page. I just hate to toss out stuff but at some point you have to. As you can tell, I can be "had" for the right price.
