I turned on my BC780XLT yesterday and have a problem where there is a constant open squelch sound while it scans through the programmed channels. When the radio stops on a valid frequency I can hear the comms as normal but when it goes back to scan I just get the open squelch sound again. It's also happening on trunking systems. When scanning an EDACS system it picks up all the EDACS beeps and blurps while searching for an active talkgroup and then is fine when stopped on an active talkgroup.. I can also hear the EDACS control channel mixed in while it is searching for active talkgroups. Same thing for motorola - when in scan mode I can hear the audio from the control channel but it still scans. It's seems my radio is messed up. I did a full reset with 2+9+MAN and it fixed it but it came back after reprogramming and turning on the radio this morning. Any idea what is going on? I'm a little bummed out because the 780 is a work horse and I've had mine since it came out.

I just found that when I put the radio into MUTE and then take it out of MUTE the problem is corrected. I wonder whats causing it though?

Electronic Altzheimers ? Kidding aside, good job to fix it. Let's hope it is permanent.

In the BC780 protocol there is a command MU that controls audio output. It has three states. MUN renders the squelch ineffective and the audio is always on. MUF turns the audio off and the squelch cannot open it. MUA is normal squelch controlled audio. Somehow your radio is getting into the MUN mode - firmware glitch? Pressing the MUTE button gets the radio back to a known state under your control.

I think your are right. That would make total sense. I wonder if this can be corrected because now every time I turn the scanner on it's doing it. Does the BC780XLT allow the firmware to be updated or even reload the current firmware? Hitting MUTE and again to turn off fixes it but only lasts until I cycle power.

BC780 firmware cannot be loaded by the user. The radio would have to be sent to Uniden for repair.

You might try a reset sequence. I think it is by holding down 2 9 & MANUAL while powering up. Clone the programing before you do as it will reset everything.

What a bummer. I guess I'll have to live with the problem. At least putting the radio in and out of Mute seems to resolve it. Resetting fixed it but it comes back after the radio is power cycled.
Thanks for all the help and Merry Christmas!

The same thing happened to me sometime back. I did the same thing as you by doing the manual reset and then reprogramming (reloading the programming via Andy's program). The problem came back. I did a total reset again and this time I manually entered in one single conventional simplex frequency into just one bank and channel. I left the radio off until the next day. The problem did not come back upon power-up. I then reloaded the radio again and sure enough the problem reappeared. I came to the conclusion that something was amiss in the programming that must have caused some sort of firmware conflict must have been occurring to cause the problem. I dumped the memory again and manually entered each system one at a time (painstakingly I might add). The problem never came back. So it was definitely related to something in the programming upload. I saved my new configuration and have never had to deal with it again. Hope this helps you. Good luck!

This is an old thread but I wanted to post this in case anyone runs into this issue. To fix it here is what I ended up doing:
  • Set the scanner in MUTE mode by holding down the SELECT key.
  • I turned off the scanner and let sit for a while
  • Turned it back on and the scanner was in MUTE mode still. I held the SELECT button again to un-mute and turned radio off.
  • Let radio sit for about 10 mins and then turned it back on and problem did not re-occur, and hasn't to this day, so it appears to been fixed perminently for now.
