dear newsgroups ,anyone heard that roomer going around about the nsw police totally encrypting there signals so we cant listen ,thx in advance ,david from newcastle nsw australia :? :x
There is a time frame but it keeps getting pushed back. Possibly financial rather than technical. Maybe both.
Latest date on the rumour mill is the end of this year (2005) for the greater Sydney-Newcastle-Wollongong urban regions to be fully digital - at which point encryption will be switched on.
Ministerial press releases suggest four new digital channels in Sydney. The splitting of J into J1 and J2 was the first one. The splitting of D into 2 channels will be the second one (whenever that happens). Goodness knows what the other two will be.
The bottom line is that scanners won't be unable to monitor once it is switched on.
I wouldn't hold your breath and sell your digital scanners on the fact that encryption will comein at the end of 2005. They still have to get the rest of Sydney digital first, and its takes well over 5 years to get it at this stage. By the time it goes fully digital, and they iron out the blackspots and bugs, you can bet that it will be another 5 years away.
The timetable is currently set for the end of 2006 for encryption to be in full use in the Greater Metro area. Having said that, there will still be analogue liaison channels.
I can see some problems arising, particularly in the areas bordering Greater Metro... having incompatable radio systems is just asking for trouble.
Thing is, the time table they set, and the reality of the time it takes for the work to get done, on the limited budgets they have are two different things. I'll be suprised if its all up and running smooth by 2006.
After all, its taken this long to get 4 Sydney districts and 3 outer Sydney districts to digital, and they aren't even half way there.
