Ugh M = monopoly-rola, moneyrola, greedy-rolaThe story of Vertex and the NYPD goes back nearly 20 years.
NYPD was looking for a radio to replace the Saber series that had more PL codes, and were looking towards the Astro. The Astro line was being phased out, so typical M told NYPD they had to buy the XTS3000 series, which would require a complete change out of radios, batteries, chargers, and accy's. NYPD likes to keep radios in a series for longer than M would like, and if you remember you could use a MX charger with the adapter pocket for the Saber series.
After some internal discussion NYPD decided to go out to bid and Vertex came in with a radio for 1/3 the cost. M was pissed as they had never lost a major agency like NYPD ever in the past. Then they tried to come up with a replacement to appease NYPD which ended up being the SE5000 which was basically an Astro PCB in a new case. There were only around 140 to 150 ever delivered, and to this date I wonder if NYPD even bought them. M would have given the radios away to not lose the big 40k unit contract.
BTW all those SE5000's have been all destroyed (except the few that got out the door before the crusher) by the electronics shop in Queens. I had an insider there who was trying to get me a pair after de-commisioning, but that never happened.
None the less NYPD went ahead and bought a large quantity of the Vertex portables. If I remember correctly around 20k units, so M being a prick decided to buy Vetex for a mear $40 million, and made the Vertex product a lower tiered radio in their product line at that time.
All this info came years ago from a very good friend (NYPD now retired) who was in charge of the NYPD radio shop at the time, and did the actual testing before purchase.
MTAPD also got a special version like NYPD of that Vertex model in VHF. Those now reside in a multitude of agencies throughout NY including the Dutchess County Sheriffs.
MTAPD uses Harris XL200Ps… matter of face the entire metro-25/mta/MRRS system is all Harris infrastructureThe story of Vertex and the NYPD goes back nearly 20 years.

And MTAPD years back had a special verison of the VX924 in vhf with a UHF receive option cardThe story of Vertex and the NYPD goes back nearly 20 years.

We are talking way before their trunking days when mta pd used a conventional systemAnd MTAPD years back had a special verison of the VX924 in vhf with a UHF receive option card

These MTAPD radios were a VX-900V VHF only, and they did donate them after MNRR refused them. Whether the Sheriff got them or not can be debated. I know I asked about them years later and was told they went to Dutchess County N.Y.
Why did they refuse them? Just curious..I guess you're not as much in the know as you think you are..
What bandsplit where apx7000s? UHF/VHF? I know for a fact the thruway authority received a bunch of them… spoke with a trooper the other day and he said they always have to flipping between channels 1 or 2 of each zone to which I said votescan probably isn’t not set up property OR not even included in the radios flashcode"MTAPD uses Harris XL200Ps… matter of fact the entire metro-25/mta/MRRS system is all Harris infrastructure."
Harris is a New York vendor, so most times NY will feed local vendors unless there is a special reason not to. So now they do have Harris, and it's been nearly 6 months of a roll out. Prior to this they had APX-7 or 8000 portables, which were purchased in a last minuit deal with M so MTAPD could get on the Conn SP system which was not at the time not a pure P-25 system so the Harris radios wouldn't work.
Most of those APX's have been repurposed internally in the MTA. Fire Chief's, Fire Brigade and LIRR Fire Marshall's all are now on the MRSS system. GCT in house Fire is no longer using the VHF system I built over 10 years ago. Though it is there for any other employees who can call in to Fire Command if needed as I designed it.

What do most users think of the Harris portables? Just wondering? I’ve noticed the dispatcher for mta pd district 6/7 is always asking to repeat the last messageBecause they didn't want/need them.
Well I can't speak for this particular agency but we've sold thousands of XL-200P's with very positive feedback. Half of them with the optioned LTE. Certainly a much better platform then radio's of yesteryear from Harris. What do most users think of the Harris portables? Just wondering? Are the SSE 5000 radios still used by NYPD?
Only reason that portable ever existed was due to the insane amount of new still to be used saber batteries and other parts the city had in stockAre the SSE 5000 radios still used by NYPD?
They issued out $10+ to everyone in a graduating class?!NYPD just got the APX NEXT with the new graduating class
