is pro-96 capable...?

I'm new to scanning, about to purchase a Pro-96. I have two questions -

1. I'm in a parking lot and a police car is sitting there talking on his radio, is there a way I could tune into his specific conversation? Or if I'm driving by police activity and want to know whats going on, is it easy to find those specific officers talking?

2. My apartment building has security with walkie-talkies - will I be able to find the frequency they are on and listen to them? How hard is something like this to do?

Stupid questions I know, but I'm curious. Thanks!

In theory, usually yes. The location of where you live is needed first though(city, state). There are some places that cannot be monitored, once we know where you are, then we can let you know if police can be monitored. The SecurityCompany on the other hand is a little easier, hopefully, but we need a name for them too.

Certainly not stupid questions.

1. Yes the 96 will be able to pick the officer up if the scanner is programmed properly to his trunked system or frequency if conventional. A couple of scanners out recently will do "close call" which may be able to pick the conversation up without pre-programming the scanner. The 96 does not have this feature but I think the Pro-97 and one or two of the BearCats do.

Edit: I was typing as Bill was posting; I agree with him, there are a very few systems which cannot be monitored and some encrypted transmissions which cannot be monitored.

2. If the walkie-talkies are GMRS, then the 96 has one of its search ranges set to scan all freqs in that system so you could capture them easily. If they are more expensive radios in other frequency ranges, the 96 can be set to search for those freqs also.

Unfortunately, the Pro-96 has neither.

The best you can do with the 96 is search the frequency ranges.
