Is Santa Clara County Sheriff (Cupertino) Phase 1 or 2?

I know RR's website has the following info for the Santa Clara County Sheriff's West area as using a P25 system, but is it Phase 1 or 2? I'm in the Cupertino, CA area and want to make sure that I get the right scanner. If they're using Phase 1, then maybe I don't need the top of the line scanner (such as the BCD536HP).

Also, does anyone know exactly what the " (0700-0130 hours)" means?

Phase 1 or phase 2 applies only to trunked systems. That is a conventional frequency so it doesn't matter. Any scanner that picks up P25 will work. If they transition to the trunked system that will make a difference. For now its running phase 1 but in the future it will be phase 2.

It means its in use from 0700-1300 hours. Time wise. 7am-1pm.

Don't overlook the Silicon Valley Regional Communications System. While you may not need a Phase 2 capable scanner now, you could need one in the near future.

Not 100% sure, someone here may know, but I think they just use the primary channel between 0130 and 0700.

So between 1:30am and 7am daily, do they simply switch to their primary channel (non P25 channel)? Curious why they'd do that.

I'm sure that is what they'll claim, but I think only Santa Clara and Sunnyvale are what the database is showing. There is a thread about this system and there may be some accurate information about which agencies are planning on switching to this system.

I don't know. I suspect that during the 7am to 1:30am window they have enough traffic to justify two main dispatch channels. Could very well be that between 1:30 am and 7 am, there just isn't enough traffic to justify having that many dispatchers on duty. I could be totally wrong though. It's been a while since I listened to them, and back then, 156.210 was the only primary dispatch channel.

mmckenna is correct. During those hours radio traffic slows down enough that one dispatcher handles everything on 156.21.

If cost is a factor...I'm listening to Control-2 on a old Uniden BC296D with a telescoping whip. It picks up and functions fine. I'm in the Sunnyvale area. You can probably find a used one at a decent price and then decide later if you really need the bells and whistles when the switches get flipped on for the 700 systems...

As others have already pointed out...County Comm cancels the "frequency split" (their terminology) at 0130 and all S/O west side units switch their mobiles and portables to Control-1. At 0700, the west side units switch their radios back to Cntrl-2.

FYI, SVRCS is a Phase 2 system. I have yet to see ANY phase 1 audio this year. Last time I heard an FDMA call was almost a year ago.
