To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am considering new vehicles and a huge factor in what I buy will be radio mounting. I have a BCD996T I would like to be able to install as well as a Kenwood TM-D700 and possibly a Motorola Maxtrac.

It the radio in the Explorer a double din? Here is a link to one dashboard photo at a local dealership:

It looks like a double din to me but I have also read that these vehicles and Rangers are actually 1 1/2 DIN. Can someone tell me if this is a true double din?

Does anyone have pictures of a 996 install in an Explorer dashboard? (yes, I searched first)

Another option is this:

I can't answer the question of double din or not but the second pic you posted of the console would be what I would chose to setup my radio equitment. Little more hidden so you don't have to worrie bout someone stealing it. I like the console setups better then doing din installs.

Well, I bought the vehicle and I have decided on the Havis-Shields console. I'll mount a Maxtrac, BCD996T and TM-D700 to start. Photos to come.

Good choice in my opion cause consoles are sweet. You can do more with them. Can't wait to see the install.

I just picked up the new car. I thought I was all set on the Havis-Shields but I am not so sure now. After getting the car, I noticed that all radios will sit pretty far back in the console. The problem with that is if I need to look at the display, I will be looking straight down. If I with to put a single DIN am/fm radio in and mount the scanner under the am/fm radio, I will be able to keep my eyes up at least. I don't want to smash into the car in front of me if I am busy looking down at a scanner.

I would go with the console, for the simple reason of the install. If you are putting in more that one thing, it gets pretty tight working in the dash, however the console is wide open. You may consider mounting your 996 DIN with the supplied bracket, then the rest of the items that you would look at a little less in the console?

K9:

I thought of that too. If I had the console in, I would probably put a lot more radios in the car. I have a TM-D700 dual band for ham and the BCD996T scanner. The TM-D700 is a remote head radio. You cannot even attach the control head to the radio itself. That would sit nicely right on top of the dashboard and there is a lot of room under the front passenger seat for the radio body. Directly below the TM-D700 control head would be the BCD996T and then the AM/FM if I utilize the double din mounting kit. That is all I really need in the vehicle. If I went with the console, I would add a Maxtrac UHF and probably look at putting in 900 MHz and 220 MHz ham radios. However, there is minimal activity on those bands where I live. I really do not need those and they would probably go unused. They would just be used to fill the console up.

I went with a single DIN Alpine radio then mounted the remote head for the Icom 2820H under it. I also have the Jottodesk console with a couple of radios installed.

As N1GTL mentioned, the console on the 2007 Explorer sits the radios too far back for viewing while driving. If the radios are going to be sitting on a dedicated channel then this is fine, otherwise best to mount the radios further forward.
